the main thing is the "golden cut". if you have an object which "cuts" the picture vertically at about 2/3 ds and another one cutting it 2/3rds horizontally it gives the picture a proportion which is pleasing to most viewers. perfect example is the picture of the office. the left edge of that screen and the lower edge of the desk in the foreground cut it pretty much perfectly in that proportion

yeah but dont you hate thinking of it in those terms? much too literal. i think its ugly and cheap. i fucking hated attending class and have some doucebag go up there and explain something like that in lifeless, scientific terms. telling me thats what it "is". yeccch. if i was a teacher id woudnt ever even bring that up

true, but it still is a fact. i don't think most photographers go around and think "i have to find a golden cut for my composition". but i think it happens anyway since it just makes a pic more pleasent to look at, so the photographer will just automatically choose that composition purely because of aesthetics...

but lets not cheapen bad composition. i think bad comp is pretty much the new good comp. youre seeing it a lot in fashion stuff and obviously with the whole snapshot aesthetic. im so down with it

i agree and all, buti think youd be surprised how many photographers i know that just consciously move their subject into those zones. there are obviously more ways to arrange than those 4 corners. composition is more of a sense, but it can be learned i guess elementarily

I saw that on the news yesterday. It's still hard to believe he never used a flash. I remember hearing about how he used to sit in one place for hours looking for that one perfect shot, one that would make people feel something.

i can't even remember (obviously it didn't make much an impression on me).

i like some of their portrait series, like the one they had in that issue of the abused teenagers? and occasionally ryan mcginley's stuff. oh, and danielle levitt is usually pretty good, even if she kinda rides the tacky/obvious a bit hard.

actually danielle was one of the only ones that stood out for me too. i liked her frat house photo. it looks so staged, and i like it.

im really glad they 1ncluded the photos of the photographers in the back. that little bit of extra context really helps me decide whether or not it is the cop-out i might think it is. you were right on about that though. thats the problem with the whole snapshot thing, is that its so vague and blank. theres little to go by, and i cant help but constantly think theyre just simpleton hipsters abusing a medium that substantiates lack of talent. ryan is good though, and it shows. i wish theyd stop including their friends and shit, and have more guys like ryan who actually give a shit about photography
