Why the fuck is there all this media fuss about 10 years of Oasis?

Cover stories, Ten Ways Oasis Changed The World on VH2, (they changed nothing, they anti-changed things), this year's Glastonbury headlining slot with no new record to promote and everyone suddenly deciding that Definitely Maybe was a landmark album. Why was there no ten years since Gish? Or at least SD? As a big Stone Roses fan i always resented Oasis' success but what totally defies belief is the fact that they're STILL treated like one of the world's biggest bands despite not having released one decent fucking song since 1996. No band in history has defied gravity and been given more second chances. And then that cunt Liam says he fucking hated doing Glastonbuy and only did it for the money. Wanker.

I fucking hate Oasis with a passion.

Their first few albums are decent, but they got bad, quick.

They play their own shitty songs at the concert, curse at people because they're leaving (these days they don't even show up anymore) and then break into a Beatles medley.

It's fucking sad.

My personal opinion of why so many people are giving these wanks these second chances are because they pretty much set themselves out to be the Beatles. They wanted to be the new Beatles. And honestly, everyone wanted the same thing. Not exactly from Oasis, but just any band that was willing to do it. But for some strange reason, when Oasis failed the bill miserably, people still kept on pretending that they actually mattered. So, I'm guessing the stigma of "we're trying to be the Beatles" is still attached to them. Despite the fact they couldn't write a decent song to save their miserable lives.

I don't understand the continuing fascination with Oasis either. I caught myself watching I Love the 90's on VH1, and the 1996 episode devoted a whole 5-10 minutes to Oasis. Granted, I like the band well enough, but they weren't *that* big a deal back then, and time certainly hasn't done much to show otherwise. The Pumpkins were much bigger that year, and they got nary a mention. Its just strange the way pop culture's selective memory works.

much as i'd love this to have been the case, i just checked my facts and figures and sadly i don't think it was. what's the story sold eighteen million copies world wide - six milion more than MCIS. in '96 oasis played their own-show at Knebworth (admittedly in the UK) before 250,000 and received 2 miilion ticket applications - a far greater own-show audience than the pumpkins ever played to even in the US at the peak of their success.

Plus the VH1 I love the 90's thing was making fun of them. They wrote some good songs but did an even better job of making asses of themselves. The making asses of themselves is what got them in I love the 90's. Jesus I'm so sick of people who want every fucking thing to be about the Pumpkins.

they also have the fastest selling UK album of all time (Be Here Now sold almost 700,000 copies in its first 4 days)

they hold the record for 'most weeks on the singles chart' in a single year too (1996) despite only releasing one single in that year. (this works on the proviso that having 2 singles in the chart on a given week = 2 weeks on the chart)

at one point, i think they had 7 singles in the charts at once.

in terms of popularity, they took the piss.

in terms of musical output, they divebombed after What's The Story

Hmmm... Both Live Forever and Disarm are great songs. Mainstream rock is pretty derivitive in general. I'm sure one could pick apart Disarm too just as you are to Live Forever. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending Oasis, but I *am* defending that song.

I was watching Snatch last night, and that Oasis song Fucking In The Bushes plays during the final boxing match sequence. I fucking hate that song and it's absolute... um, bullocks, as you Brits would say... but it fit quite well into the movie.

Oasis is a great band. Definitely Maybe and Heathen Chemistry are fucking fabulous albums. Fuck it, so are (What's the Story) Morning Glory, The Masterplan, Be Here Now, and Standing on the Shoulder of Giants. And their next album is shaping up to be fucking fabulous too. And they're fucking fantabulous live. Personally, I am loving all this 10 year stuff and I can't fucking wait for the Definitely Maybe dvd and the other stuff. And "Stop Crying Your Heart" is one the greatest fucking songs ever.

i just rented this documentary called live forever and it was great. it was about the whole rise and fall of britpop and the blur/oasis battle and tony blair coming to office and how people just started taking a ton of drugs and became shit. and noel and liam gallagher are so self-absorbed it is hilarious, except with noel you are laughing with him and with liam you are laughing at him.

The last two Blur albums have been kinda shitty, I don't like the boundary pushing. I want some rock. Same with Radiohead.
