Whatever.

I listen to a little bit of everything, so I hardly consider myself musically ignorant. I have to remind myself sometimes that this board has a tendecy to loathe anything remotely mainstream and praise unknown unlistenable hack work as being the saviours of music as we know it.

Give me a song by one of your favorite bands to download. Shoot for a band/singer I might not know of. Then I will pass judgment on your music taste.

P.S.: I stopped listening to this boards advice of what was good after I saw legions of board members here heap praise on The Mars Volta.

what you call "unlistenable hack work" or what other many mainstream fans call "indie bullshit" is usually far from being either. there is a substance in that stuff that is going over your head, youve gotta understand that. 'elitists' understand why bands like U2 or other easy stuff is liked, but have sophisticated taste enough to be bored or even insulted by it. u2 is to 'indie bullshit' what spiderman 2 is to classic foreign cinema or whatever. the former just isnt as interesting

more people hate mars volta than love them here, relax

Was going to say Mars Volta, but I think Netphoria beat me to it. :erm

Seriously though, it's not that I didn't give them a chance. When one of my moronic contacts on AIM couldn't shut his fat face about it for ten seconds, I decided to download one of their songs.

What I downloaded was a 7 minute song where the last 4 minutes of it was the same 4|4 loop repeated over and over again. I wanted to put a brick through my skull. So, when I asked him about why his taste in music is so shitty, and why the fuck they made the ending of the song four minutes longer than they should have, he just said that they needed to make the CD an hour long.

Between the horrible music and this dumbshits opinion on it, I figured it would be best if I just walk away and not think about it again.

But regardless of how stupid he may be, Mars Volta really fucking suck. And don't you dare label me as an indie snob. I don't listen to indie music. Not because I don't like it, but because I'm fucking lazy. I listen to music - period. I know what I like and what I dislike, as well as I have some small notion of what is good and what is bad. And trust me, the Mars Volta fucking suck.

innocence mission - tommorrow on the runway (from the album Befriended)
pele - crisis win (from the album Enemies)

and just to prove that major label music doesn't completely suck:
justin timberlake - rock your body
I know it's totally a michael jackson rip-off but damn is it good!

i would not be too suprised if this was a big publicity lie. their music has gotten so monotonous that the only way they can sell more records is through scandal. they're probably creaming their irish jeans over the free press this is giving them.

it hasn't even leaked! SUPPOSEDLY some weiner took a copy of some of the rough tracks. he might have just listened to it once and tossed it. "the edge" himself very well could have lost it or something. or accidently thrown it away. THIS DOES NOT CHANGE HOW BLAND THE ALBUM WILL BE. IT WILL STILL BE BLAND MUSIC. THE FRENCH POLICE ARE IDIOTS FOR EVEN TAKING THE CASE.

god, U2 bothers me.

It is music & it is there to enjoy in any way you deem fit. Instead of accepting this, idiots like you try to turn everything into a title war & miss the whole point of what music was for to begin with.

I'm glad I don't look at music like the idiots described in your post.

What I like about your answer is that it's so typical of your ilk: Whatever is popular and mainstrean is unsophisticated and shallow. Whatever isn't is powerful and high-class. If you don't like it, it's not because it's bad, it's because you don't understand it. You're probably the same type of person that thinks that the "painting" of Mary done in feces is high art.

I've listened to some bands not considered mainstream, and with a few exeptions, they sound rather unlistenable. It's not because my music taste lacks sophistication; it's because most unknown bands fly under the radar for a reason other than it's shit music that dominates the airwaves. Someone can do far worse than like U2. Try someone liking Switchfoot, for example.

That said, I hope the new U2 is better than ATYCLB. Only about half that album was truly good. Some of it was rather insipid.

there are different kind of people that like the same music. some people like indie or obscure music because of reasons other than the music, i.e. because its cool or not what jocks listen to or whatever. some people like it on the same relative level mainstream fans like mainstream music; just cause. its their taste or whatever. tastes dictate different things, and there is such a thing (as in film or any art) as more challenging, and in turn, more rewarding music. thats what i prefer. i dont usually like easy shit because it just doesnt interest me. i dont hate u2 because theyre mainstream, its because they suck

all of that presupposes too many things that arent so. there is no natural and just heirarchy to the music world, where good music is popular and bad is unknown. in many cases, as in other fields of art, its the opposite. it just takes people with more mature taste in that feild to understand it as being so, and you shouldnt be insulted by that - it doesnt have to be condescending. the general public is simple, challenging but truly substantial music is a niche thing. another fallacy is that, in fact, the stuff is "unlistenable" and devoid of substance. enough so to the point that anyone liking it is faking it or disingenuous. you have to realize two things: that there is a substance and quality in the genre, that you are missing; that isnt being heard. its a fact. two, that people can and do like said music for sincere reasons, and arent just posturing

the reason i like u2 is the moods they create on their first 4 - 5 albums, the unforgettable fire was a masterpiece, and i even enjoy their weaker work at that early time, like october.
it's just that feeling they transport, that feeling of standing on green hills in ireland at afternoon. if you don't get it, don't try to judge them using zooropa and stuff. the early work - that's "where the heart is".

plus, some stuff on achtung baby was also genius. acrobat is superb.

i disagree. please do judge by Zooropa, because it's as much a masterpiece as the Unforgettable Fire. if you don't get it, you just don't. too bad.

i don't care much for green hills, myself.
