queen:

sheer heart attack - their first really diverse pop album, every song is completely different from the others and it fucking rocks.

queen II - hard rock and opera, the fan's favourite. my favourite. completely over the top but wonderful.

a night at the opera - their biggest commercial breakthrough and arguably their best. diverse like every early queen album, wonderful pop songs and hard rawking bliss.

Yeah, this or Gestapo's choices.

If you want something later, I'd suggest -
Innuendo
or
Made In Heaven

Whiskeytown: Rural Free Delivery is too damn hard to find and isn't worth the high price. It's not that great either, just rare. I'd go for Pneumonia or Faithless Streets. Both are far better albums. Stranger's Alminac isn't too bad either.

Flying Burrito Brothers: I would get the Hot Burritos! The Flying Burrito Brothers Anthology: 1969-1972 . It's not really an anthology per se, it is their first 2 albums (Gram Parson's era, the first disc) and their next/last real album (Rick Robert's era, second disc), plus it has some demos live, and unissued tracks. You get 3 solid albums and some extra tracks to boot, so not too bad. The best thing is that you can get it for a pretty cheap price. also, since their proper albums are out of print, you really have not choice. If you just want the Gram Parson's era recordings (which are all that's really important), I would get Sin City, which is a one-disc version of the Anthology with two bonus tracks.

Thumbs up Re: recommend the best 1st album to buy from these groups:

From a biiiiiiiiiiig Joy Division/Early new order fan:

new order - I could list almost everything early, but... making an early new order buy guide (as I'm not a big fan of post 85 stuff except for the late get ready), their finest moment is probably "Power Corruption & Lies", in here you won't find singles, but their masterpiece as an album (there is a stupid us version including blue monday and it's b.side - the beach, but it was a paralell 12", since the album incIuded 586, an early version, ...but the album flows wrong that way, so get the uk version). Some highlights are Age of consent, ultraviolence, your silent face, leave me alone... This album marked the introduction of electronic sounds and dance beats but retaining their depressive sound atmospheres and ironic lyrics as "the village".

If you are only getting to New Order, I'd recommend Substance 1987, wich is composed of all 12"'s and b respective b-sides on cd2 (not on the 2lp version), It's NOT a G-hits, but the only way to get those 12's in cd (there are best of's as "best of", "rest of"(remixes), International and the new box. In here you'll find some early great stuff that isn't on any album, as with Joy Division, their 12"s were parallel to the albums. Highlights on this are Ceremony/In a lonely place (the first new order 12" with the 2 last joy division songs made, In a lonely place is fucking depressive "hangman looks round as he waits, gull stretches tight then it breaks", we all know what happened to who wrote these lyrics some weeks later), Everything's gone green, Blue monday, thieves like us, perfect kiss and true faith, and great b-sides as hurt or mesh on cd2.

Movement is their first album, my second fave but very underrated (I can't understand how, but sometimes refered as their worst), they sound fierce as joy division, it has great songs as The Him, ICB, Doubts Even Here.

Then you have the BBC sessions if you really liked the above albums with more raw sounding versions, some maybe better than album ones as ICB or We All Stand.

queen - Innuendo and A Kind Of Magic

slayer - reign in blood

Most of the other bases have been covered.

For Desert Sessions pick up vol. 7&8 or 5&6.

If you really dig PJ Harvey pick up vol. 9&10.
