WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency was wrong about Iraq's purported pre-war mobile biological weapons laboratories, a key part of the case about suspected weapons of mass destruction, Secretary of State Colin Powell said on Sunday.
"I'm very concerned," he said in reply to a question on the NBC program "Meet the Press" about having used claims in a U.N. Security Council speech now known to have been "inaccurate and discredited."

"When I made that presentation in February 2003, it was based on the best information that the Central Intelligence Agency made available to me," he said.

Last month, Powell described the assertions he made about the purported labs as "the most dramatic" element of his Feb. 5, 2003, speech. He acknowledged on April 2 the information was suspect but stopped short of drawing any public conclusions.

In his comments on NBC, Powell went further.

"It turned out that the sourcing was inaccurate and wrong and, in some cases, deliberately misleading. And for that, I am disappointed, and I regret it," he said.

As recently as January, Vice President Dick Cheney cited the discovery of two trucks as "conclusive" evidence of the mobile labs described by Powell. But CIA Director George Tenet later told Congress he had warned Cheney not to be so categorical about the discovery.

A CIA spokesman declined comment.

Agreed. If there's one completely likeable and genuinely accepted to be forthcoming member of the administration, it's Powell.

If he didn't know the intelligence was incorrect, he must have had an idea - he wasn't exactly toeing the line with regards to Iraq initially, and whatever turnaround he displayed must have been (to at least some degree) down to political pressure. The reservations must have still been there, as well as knowledge that there was an agenda behind everything.

I disagree with that statement as well. I don't think Powell's credibility has been ruined, and I think his admissions as of late have helped that.

Powell will never run for a major office now. He had a fighting to chance for the presidency.

Now he has a less-than-fighting chance at being a cabinet member.

I severely disagree with this. I still think Powell will be the first minority President if he chooses to run.

He won't be. His political career is shot dead thanks to the CIA and FBI. And, I seriously doubt he wants anything to do with the presidency now.

if his career is dead it's thanks to his own actions. he chose to team up with a shady president who appointed shady people to important positions, and he chose to support that president in a campaign to convince the world of something which he had to realize, especially from the inside, was totally insidious and misleading.

U.S. Reportedly Kills 40 Iraqis at Party

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A U.S. helicopter fired on a wedding party early Wednesday in western Iraq, killing more than 40 people, Iraqi officials said. The U.S. military said it could not confirm the report and was investigating.

Lt. Col Ziyad al-Jbouri, deputy police chief of the city of Ramadi, said between 42 and 45 people died in the attack, which took place about 2:45 a.m. in a remote desert area near the border with Syria and Jordan. He said those killed *******d 15 children and 10 women.

Dr. Salah al-Ani, who works at a hospital in Ramadi, put the death toll at 45.

Associated Press Television News obtained videotape showing a truck containing bodies of those allegedly killed. Most of the bodies were wrapped in blankets and other cloths, but the footage showed at least eight uncovered, bloody bodies, several of them children. One child was headless.
