Question bass effects through the computer

I play bass and I don't have any pedals. I could buy them, but since i only spend money on food or music, i won't. Is there a way to get those effects in the computer? If playing bass through the computer is possible. Can I download programs for this?

I know nothing about making music on computers, so flame me if this post seems particularly ignorant.

EEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWW

For a serious answer far away from that scary stuff above, try revalver, it's a guitar rack simulator (sounds good on bass anyway), but you can do a lot of stuff with it (comes as a dxi/vst plug in to use on a host as cubase/fruity/sonar bla bla) since pre and amp type to effects/cabs/microphone position. BUT if you want to use it real time (it actually comes with a real time host just for kicks) you'll need a very powerfull computer with dedicated hardware to achieve pci latency low enough to play real time (at least less than 5ms, you won't achieve that without $500 soundcards), so it won't sound as a delay, but you can try it just for a taste.
