which superheroes do you prefer, those of Marvel Comics (Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic 4, Hulk, etc.)... or DC Comics (Superman, Batman, Justice League, etc.)? my choice is obvious...

in my mind, marvel definately wins for the most visually appealing and interesting characters (spanning decades) in the superhero genre...
d.c. however wins lots of bonus points for their thoughtprovoking mature books...the vertigo imprint, 'watchmen', 'the dark knight returns', 'sandman'...the list goes on and on if i had to pick, though? marvel is the most fun. |

I've never really been into Marvel or DC, though I would at least read Spider-man from time to time. DC was the worst of the two. I always hated the artwork, and would rather spend my money on Mad magazine than a comic book... that was, until I got into Spawn.
Of course, I don't read it anymore. It just became garbage. It's hard to read a comic book that someone created and then handed over to other people so that they could focus exclusively on selling out.

I used to read Todd McFarlane's column in Wizard (E.G.O.) every month way back when I used to buy comics. You could see how gradually he just got fucking pissed off at the comic industry in general. He wrote like an open letter one time asking kids if they wanted him to pull cheap gimmicks like Marvel and DC (Chromium Covers, kill off the main character and bring him back, Alternate Universe, Crossovers) because those seemed to be the comics they were buying.
The reason they started Image was because they wanted to do something outside of the industry. I think he forgot that when Spawn got big and wanted to compete with the industry, and the only way to truly compete with the industry is to get down in the dirt. Then of course when you emerce yourself in the industry, you lose your passion for actually creating comics. I think you can appreciate Spawn at the level where McFarlane was writing (even when he stopped drawing, Greg Capullo did a badass job) and take that for what it was worth. |

Now you got me all sentimental FearFactory. If you want to see some good comics by Marvel check out McFarlane's run on Spiderman, he arguably did the best work on the Spiderman books ever. Black Costume, Venom (before they started drawing him with slimy green shit and a fucked up mouth), and Spidey just getting down in the dirt all around.

I guess, I really didn't mind it, that's probably why they got him. I certainly love Capullo when he did come into his own.

I'm guessing you didn't like his actual style very much? I also liked Tony Daniel, I stopped reading around then. I honestly haven't read those books since I stopped collecting.

Capullo and Tony Daniel and all the others just conformed their style to that more outlandish, insanely detailed way of penciling that McFarlane started. Capullo drew more like a Dale Keown or Mark Silvestri in the beginning.
It makes perfect sense, being that the art and McFarlane's specific style was what made so many people get into the comic in the first place. It was just like Todd took a permanent vacation and had artists who decided to emulate him fill in. |

By that logic I guess all critical observations are 'taking things too seriously.' I think I'll call up Spin, Rolling Stone, Roger Ebert, and many others and just say, "Man, you take it too seriously. Don't waste your time making comments or observations."

Why the hell wouldn't McFarlane bring in guys that draw like him? There's nothing wrong with liking them either despite their lack of originality. If I said I didn't want to listen to anything influenced by the Beatles, I'd probably just end up listening to the Beatles. He had a good run and it ended.

Having influences and the complete changing of one's style to cater to a specific audience are miles apart, chief.

Right, the next time anyone in any medium of art blatantly rips someone else's style, I'll keep in mind that Best Looking Boy told me that to point that out would be to overthink it.

out of the 70 or so comics that I purchase each month, about 30 of them are from Marvel, so I guess that is what I prefer. but then I read alot of DC as well, the standard heroes(Batman, Green Arrow), and also most of the Vertigo and Wildstorm imprint titles. Marvel appeals to me a little more though, personally, I'm not sure why. maybe it has to do with the Ultimate universe, or maybe it is just the X-Men
