the test is similar to the SATs in how its scored, but the questions are a lot more difficult

for some reason the new school doesn't require it. but my friend and my sister are both super smart and they prepared for it for a long time and they got just over 1000. i don't know what the average is. my sister got into columbia though so maybe schools don't even give a damn about it anymore.

ok. i was actually thinking of maybe applying to either (or both) columbia and/or the new school. i'm pretty sure columbia requires it, but i didn't know the new school didn't. hmmm. is the new school good at all with fellowships and the like? i plan on taking out all my own loans anyway, but, you know, i'd like some help if it's possible.

Depending on what you plan on studying, schools don't really care too much about it. NYU doesn't even require it. In fact, several schools don't require it...so look into what schools you want to apply to first. Definitely buy a prep book...I suggest one that has a cdrom test with it (but I think they all do now) so you can get used to taking the test on the computer. There is a logic section on GRE that is just like the one on the LSAT and is probably something you have never tested in before (since it is not on the SAT, ACT, etc.). The math section is actually easier on the GRE than other standardized tests...it is much more basic.

I'm taking it in Januaury. I'm a little freaked - I never took the SAT or ACT. My friends who have taken the GRE say that as long as you buy a book and study you'll be fine.

Besides, you can take it 5 more times to get a better score if you fuck it up.

At $120 per time, i doubt that many people will retake it too much
