Since I've already been labeled an "intellectual poser" by you, I'll tell. According to what I've heard, prisoners didn't have belts to keep up their pants or something so they ended up "sagging". I think this is a slightly racist urban legend, though.

The legend of the sag as I understand it also comes from prison but it is more homophobic of a legend than racist. I've heard this from reliable sources but have performed no independent verification:

People sagged in prison to let other guys know that they were down with getting their salad tossed (ass eaten out) or getting fucked in the ass. You sagged to let the prowlers know who was looking for this kind of thing.

The way the sagging spread to mainstream was that these prison saggers would keep sagging once back in the outside world. One version of the story is that they sagged on the outside still as a kind of "letting people know what's up with their ass" kind of think. Like hey I'm cool with that.

I heard this story from someone who was disputing the validity of what Rhino said. Like "hey that's not how sagging started, but this is." I've heard it from a few people but like I said, this may be urban legend as well.

One time in high school gym class, the coach brought out a trampoline so people could jump and do flips and land in one of those big kooshy pads. This guy, Anthony "Tree" Hopkins (the 6-11 185 center for the basketball team) did this huge ass jump on it, and when he did a flip, his pants fell down around his ankles because he was sagging too low. It was fucking hilarious.
