Question

I don't listen to him, but I know people who do and they are always telling me to listen to 'alchemy'.

Rising Force is his best album. Some of the best riffs of all time. Too bad hardly anyone can play them.

His new album, Attack! is really good. It is completely different than any album he has done before. His singer isn't so falsetto (Dougie White) and the production is really raw and "live" sounding. He is at the top of his game as far as shredding goes as well.

Stand out tracks (all albums):
Little Savage
Far Beyond the Sun
Evil Eye
Black Star
I Am a Viking
Valhalla
Disciples of Hell
Razor Eater

Alchemy is an ok album. Some of the vocal melodies are a little strange, but the shredding is top notch. It's a really long album and I don't think you can get it other than an import.

Malmsteen kind of tried to get too commercial sounding after Trilogy. I have the Malmsteen Collection VHS and a few of the music vidoes on there are beyond cheese. It's like he was trying to immitate a third rate Poison.

So, in essence, early Malmsteen: good. Mid-period malmsteen, not good unless you like cheesey hair metal. Later malmsteen: good if you like heavy metal with super fast solos.

Does Malmsteen ever do acoustic stuff? I once downloaded a song with him shredding on an acoustic guitar.

Ya he plays the acoustic once in a while. If he ever plays Black Star live, he'll do an extended acoustic intro. Although acoustic technique is not all that great, it is still better than most.

I've been listening to the songs I got and I really like them. I prefer his acoustic playing to his electric playing. It seems more...I don't know, richer.
