ugh yeah. i have like run-off sentences and run-on sentences etc etc etc. it gets me so mad. my brain doesn't grammatically function unless i'm concentrating. garrrrrr. i think it's because i think faster than i write and i assume i put a verb in my sentence even though i really didn't.

"Soon the idea that God was too divine + high up to even try reaching, + a reaction against this artistic representation of religion."

GOOD FUCKIGN JOB

Maybe you should practice writing complete, correct sentences in everyday situations.

Mine went pretty good too. I got a B on my Art History Exam. Mostly 'cause I was able to nail all the slides. I did all right on the essay but I didn't even try on the vocab. & all I did in the essay was ramble on for 3 pages about the differences in Greek & Egyptian religion. Yeah I suck.

maybe i should but when i read over my essay the main wasn't really th egrammatical errors but just that it wasn't long enough and i wasn't able to drill in my point. but considering i only had 20 mins to do it i guess she wasn't expecting a dissertation.

I'm glad i don't have real midterms....my college does 3 "midterms" which is essentially bullshit....so pretty much at the end of every month all my exams come up in a week..... i prefer it though, b/c it lessens the effect of 1 poor test score...plus it makes me learn more. i don't crack open the books until its test time, and if there were only 1 test per semester aside from the final, then i wouldn't fucking study. heh.

It's sad. Something that occurred to me. Each of my books were roughly $80. Now, if i read them 4x, that's a $20 reading session. That fucking sucks

*gasp* alma matter pride has already set in!!!
but seriously, folks, i'm sure it's not intentional, but on grading essays teachers (unless they're relaly hardnosed for some reason) tend to be really lenient. So long as you sort of address the material and write coherently they'll be like "OFUK YA! THIS KIDZ BRILLIANT!" cos most kids can't write for shit. even at a hoity toity college like W&M

ugh i'm not trying to be alma mater pride. it's just a known fact okay? they like to contrast it with uva because people here have serious issues with uva (it pisses me of fsometimes) they compare w&m's lack of grade inflation to uva's 'gentleman's c' or some shit. so it's not alma mater pride it's just me getting defensive when people accuse me of not earning my grade. nevermind. it's not fucking alma mater pride and i'm not saying it's a hoity toity school. i know full fucking well that she gave me an a because no matter how stupidly written the essay was it was probably better than most of the shit people in my class pull out of their ass. plus 60% of the midterm was 'ids' which i did fantastically on if i do say so myself.

i know all of this shit okay? i just get really really resentful when i say something self-deprecating about myself just to be self-deprecating and people fucking assume it's the truth.

and i don't know how true the grade inflation thing is because as i said i can't compare it with other schools and i am experiencing tremendous guilt over my grade. like i got an 86 on my econ midterm and it was an a. and i got an a on my government midterm and i'm not sure i deserved it. and i got an a on my history midterm and i know i deserved it but i don't know. not sure i deserved such a high a. but i don't know if it's grade inflation or just guilt or just the fact that they're 100-level classes and the teachers don't expect much. nevermind.

ok that's a little extreme. usually curves only bring your grade up a point or two, but to make an 86 an A is a mite extreme. and i was only teasing you before... you know that by now.

well a 90 is an a so it was only bringing my grade up 4 points. well the curve started at 85 and above being an a. plus it's a huge class and a lot of people in my class were stupid. plus it consisted of what, 6 questions worth somewhere in between 15-20 points each i guess or something like that. so it wasn't a multiple-choice test it was just 6 'problems'. i don't know. i don't fucking know. i saw my professor and he asked what i got and i said '86' and he was like 'wow that was one of the highest grades in the class' so who fucking knows. i think the 'william and mary doesn't have grade inflation' is mostly like with the science stuff like my roommate is failing biology and stuff because of it. i think. i don't know. i just don't know. i feel so horribly guilty i don't even know why.

if anybody, certainly someone with run-on sentence(s) and misspellings, is making a 96 on a midterm then there defintely is grade inflation

i mean, come the fuck on

i went to a school that's FAMOUS for grade inflation and i don't think i ever made as high as a 96 on any exam i ever took...well maybe that's pushing it but i bet i never made much above a 95 on ANYTHING (except my international politics final that i studied for 4 days for and got a 102)

and i graduated with a 3 fucking 8 EDIT

exactly. i don't think you have to read my other post now

so, there's no grade inflation? that means you're smarter than almost everyone else at your school...that's definitely possible

Thumbs down okay, mpp, you asked for it --

To be Completed in 50 Minutes:

part one: IDS - identify century and significance in a few sentences.

1) Paul of Tarsus - 1st Century AD - St. Paul made the basic outline of Christian theology that is still used today. Also declared one does not have to be a Jew first before they can become a Christian. This caused the conversion of a great number of pagans which caused Christianity to spread. Also set the standard of the religion being based on faith, not blood or mosaic law.

received: 6/6 points

2) Hijra: 7th century AD - Muhammed's Journey to the city of Medina. This is the year that starts the Muslim Calendar. The Hijra allowed Mohammed to develop political power and followers and therefore made the conquest of lands and the spread of the religioin possible.

received: 6/6 points

3) Delian League: 5th Century BC - Created as a result of the Persian wars by many Greek city-states. Eventually became a de facto Athenian Empire: it resulted in great power, wealth, and influence for Athens.

received: 5/6 points (left out that the empire contributed(?can't read handwriting) democratic values

4) Aristotle: 4th century BC - Greek philosopher. Developed political theories still respected + used today. Also a great scientific thinker - classified animals in a system still used today. Believed one could find truth through reason - great western idea

received: 6/6 points

5) Alexander the Great: 4th Century BC - Macedonian Prince + conqueror. Gained much of the Persian empire + lands all the way up to the Indus River. These conquests created Hellenization - the spread of Greek culture; the intermingling of ideas; and the growth of trade + great trading + intellectual cities.

Part II - Identify passage, author, and century then state significance in 4-5 sentences

Pericles' Funeral Oration; Transcribed by Thucydides, 5th century BC

In this speech Pericles glowlingly praises the governmental scructure of Athens. He made this speech during the Peloponnesian war and is comparing Athens to its enemy Sparta + other such "undesirable" city-states. He places importance on the equality + democracy of Athens - how it rises above class considerations + bases its system on justice + merit. This form of law is much different from previous systems where Justice was differentiated by class + given a divine basis.

Received: 15/15 points

Magna Carta 1215 - written by vassals + signed by King John of England

Many in England were upset with outrageous taxations by King John in order to finance the war in France. They drew up the Magna Carta - great charter - and forced John to sign it. It set the ideals that taxation cannot exist without representation (which paved the way for the growth of parliamentary power) and that not even the king is above the law. Although this document was really only relevant to a small portion of the population, (most people being serfs + not really being mentioned) it allowed for future developments + extrapolations furthering representative + parliamentary Democracy.

received: 15/15 points

Part III - choice of essays - I chose to compare the art under Justinian's Byzantium with the art under Pericles' Athens:

When looking at the artistic + cultural aspects of the Golden Age of Greece + the Height of the Byzantine Empire, what jumps out most is the factor that religion, or the lack thereof, played in both civilizations. Byzantium was a Christian society and Greece had a religion centered around many Gods with human-like traits. These factors plaid a great role in the monuments the two societies left behind.

The greatest cultural achievment of Byzantium + its emperor Justinian is widely held to be the great Cathedral Hagia Sophia. Immense + domed + filled with artistic detail + light, it is the prime symbol of a society's dedication to its religion. Other famous forms of art in Byzantium were also centered on the Church. Incense holders, priestly robes, stained glass, and mosaics all were created by great artisans who funneled their artistry through the Church. The impact of religion on this society can also be seen in the later iconoclast movement, which felt religious artwork to be idolatrous + subsequently destroyed many of these creations.

Athens, also, was culturally centered around its religion, at least in the beginning, but this religion, being much more based on the world, was much more human + structured in its approach to art. The Parthenon, built during the age of Pericles to honour Athena, the patron goddess of athens, utilizes the Golden Proportion in its design and is in result a structure reflecting on Athena - the goddess of wisdom. Other forms of art centered around the human gods + the logical approach to nature - statues of Gods were given perfect proportions, but at the same time remained recognizably human. This humanization of the Gods led to an eventual interest in all humans - even the humble peasant.

Just through analyzing the artistic creations of a society one discovers many layers of complexities and meaning inherent in every society. Byzantium was a culture devoted to a majestic or unreachable God; they built a huge cathedral + placed majestic works of metallurgy + craftsmanship in an effort to reach God. Soon the idea that God was too divine + high up to even try reaching, + a reaction against this artistic representation of religion. The Athenians saw human qualities in their Gods - including playfulness, wisdom, and physical form - and they incorporated this into their art. Eventually many Athenians found the human aspect more intriguing then the God aspect, and in contrast with the iconoclasts, who abandoned art for religion, the Athenians abandoned religion for art.

her comment: Very good essay 37/40

and i didn't post that to prove how smart i was or whatever, i mostly posted it so you could see whether the grammatical flaws (which i *******d) greatly impaired my work. plus i also wanted you to see that it's perfectly possible to get a 96 on a shit-easy exam. thirdly, of course curving exists. i seriously don't understand 'grade inflation' in the firs tplace but everyone says 'william and mary doesn't have grade inflation' but now i wonder if they are only referring to the science classes which most people do extremely poorly in. actually a lot of people i know have terrible grades. this friend of mine who i ate dinner tonight with has all bs and a c she said. i don't fucking know. i'm not a statistician i only know what i've heard.
