Default just got back from the vines and guess what...

They're good. they're a good rock 'n roll band. craig is a natural charismatic front man, when he smashes his guitar it's not forced and and embarassaing like when billy smashes his at the end of silverfuck on viephoria... but they are NOT a great band in the Nirvana/Stone Roses league... not yet anyway. Why? Because they have two such separate gears (grunge or pretty sub Beatles pop) both of which are inherently dirivative and which when strung together over a live set somehow cancel each other out producing something less than the sum of its parts. monentum is gained then lost gained then lost... I also hated the way they left the pretty second guitarist (i think he's names ryan) off stage for roughly 50% of the songs - that's not what a rock n roll band's are about. But even if the climactic drum trashing now seems obligatory and stage managed, Craig is a star, a kind of alt-rock-Prince that Beck aspired to be but never quite was. If they're coming your way, go and seem 'em, just don't expect to see the equivalent of Nirvana in 1991 because they're not that special yet.

I was browsing in a music store the other day and they started piping in "Get Free". I started kinda tapping along and next thing I knew I was walking out with the album in a plastic bag...

I haven't actually given it a listen yet, but I think I will now..

i dunno, i have seen them the two times they have played in dc. the first time was good, before the album came out and the second time at the 930 club was so bad that it looked like they were trying to be terrible. i dig the album a lot, but the dude just is psycho... or tripping.

"Get Free": Think this Vines song sounds like something Kurt Cobain might have written? Well, there's a good reason: He did, in 1991. But at the end of this recording, made by a fan during an in-store appearance in October of that year, Cobain can be heard apologizing for the tune, which he judged "an abomination" and vowed never to play again. "I'm too young for self-parody," he told the crowd...
