setting up the internet with a router

the router company's tech support isn't open till monday, i already called.

i don't know where else to turn so i'll post here.

we got a router and shit and the server computer is all fine but we don't know how to set up so that all the other people can get online.

help!

what kind of router

you have to assign an ip to the other computer w/ the router
and then make sure all attempts at connect are forwarded to one computer.
I'm not sure how, I'll take a look though

Well, what can't you hook up, the wires, the computers to the router? Is it wireless?

Also, do you have the manual?

What Router do you have and how many computers?

i don't know what kind of router it is... i dont' know gah. i'll ahve to call rogers and ask for an ip address. it's a 4 port router so 4 of us... :-/

The router is supposed to automatically assign IPs through DHCP. The rogers cable line should go into the router, then all the other computers that you want to have internet access should connect to the router.

I think that is how it works, I've never set one up myself but my friend has his network setup that way.

Well I don't know all the information about your computers setup but you need the following things on those computers:

1. A network card

2. Cable connecting the network card to the router

3. Make sure your network card is installed properly on your machine if Network Neighborhood isn't on your desktop then get your Windows cd and install the network files.

4. I am assuming you will be setting up the computers to all be the same Workgroup name and not a Domain name. So make sure all the computers have all the same Workgroup names.

Other than that I don't think you need to configure much else..... The router should assign the ips and stuff like that.

If it works then there is no further configuring to do, the computers should be able to connect to the net automatically.

yeah i'll call rogers, the router people and stuff tomorrow. can't deal with it now.

As far as I know, you just patch all the computers into the router with ethernet cables, and then go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings and either set it to automatically detect or drop in the router's IP address in the box. I haven't actually had to set up a router before though

The internet was all set-up on my computer. We hooked the router to my computer and the ran the cable to my roommate's bedroom and hooked it into her computer...and it just worked, we did nothing else to it.

yeah, that would work, but you would need two network cards in your computer, would you not?

I have no idea. If so, then it was already there. We literally just plugged the stuff in and didn't do anything else.
