Question Is Alternative Rock the most narrow genre of music going today?

a loaded question, yes. Might not be a great question, but its a decent topic starter.

From my limited experience of viewing the local rock scene (Bay Area), its a bunch of bands basically beating themselves up to play with 2 or 3 other shitty bands at dead or dying bars hardly anyone goes to anymore (partly because you have to sit through complete shit to then listen to the band you may be there for...).

maybe the most narrow is actually the Metal scene...but what passes for Alternative today I think is just too esoteric for the general population to want to grab a hold of and pay attention to (I know, that's the point of "Alternative" you might say...)

by modern day music industry standards, "alternative" is pretty much anything that has a distorted guitar in it. "independent" is a word that looks like it's going to wind up the same way very soon. all bands are "independent" at one point, unless they were put together by a record label. it's a weak way for anyone to try to be "hip" and "flirt with credibility." they are terms that used to mean something unique and underground years ago, but are no longer anywhere near that.

i agree wholeheartedly.

let us never apply labels to anything ever again, that way we don't have to keep inventing new ones once the old ones get raped by radio stations.

btw, every rock radio station in hawaii's motto is "Yada yada point yada, Hawaii's ONLY alternative station."

yet they all play the same crap.
