Default If you are bored or care (pres election commentary inside)

I am now active on the Oregonian's oregonlive.com as part of their feature on undecided voters. I will update the blog as near to daily as I can. Here is a link:

If you work for a democratic candidate then this topic may be NSFW...

Man Colin, I don't agree with your views but that is some seriously well thought out shit. My girlfriend is from Albany, so I'm going to direct her to your blog for Election 2004 material.

The Act *******d items like unwarranted search and seizure of library records and credit card transactions, in blatant disregard of the constitution. Imagine if this power were employed with a different government, under different circumstances. Racketeering laws were originally meant to defeat the mafia, yet now they are used to their fullest extent for all kinds of things originally outside their scope of implementation.
I was wondering if you could complete the connection you were making here between the PATRIOT Act and Racketeering laws. I was left kind of confused.

fair enough, I'll update it. The idea is that presidents enact legislation to deal with some kind of "emergency" problem but after the emergency is gone, the legislation begins to be applied to it's fullest extent in ways which it was never intended.

Ah, okay, so it was an analogy. Roger that. It's really easy to see how the PATRIOT Act could be used to infringe on privacy rights, outside of terrorism issues.

I would just add that sentence above for clarification. The connection made sense to me and I'm mildly retarded.

And you're right, this happens all the time. I believe the Wiretapping Laws are the same way.

I would even argue that pretty much any law made for "wartime" or "emergency" conditions. But then again that steps on a lot of very controversal programs still around now.

I glossed over it, saw stuff about the mafia and didn't realize it was an analogy. Ooops. :erm
