Thumbs down If you're quoting someone and you want to immediately follow the quote...

with some punctuation, the punctuation goes OUTSIDE of the quotation marks.

e.g. according to a leading "liberal." etc etc

it's fuckin annoying...and actually distorts the quote. the entire point of a quotation is that it refers to what was said verbatim.

thankyou for listening Nimrod, Sawdust Restaurants and everyone else...

I know that's the rule, but it always looked weird to me that way.

according to the leading "liberal".

It just looks out of place.

I always thought it was inside the quotation marks.

What if you're putting quotation marks in place of making Dr. Evil-like hand quotes? That's why I usually use them.

It goes inside the quote marks, according to Associated Press style.

"I think they go like this," Dr. Martin said, while looking perplexed. "I really do, the AP style says so."

On a side not, only question marks are allowed outside the quote marks, and only in certain circumstances.

Except for a few exceptions, punctuations generally go inside the quotation marks.

Yeah, that's correct.

You seldom use them outside, but if you are quoting someone, and they did not specifically ask a question but the statement you are writing does, you put it after their quote.

the simple rule is...if the person implied that piece of punctuation in their speech, it goes INSIDE the quotation marks

e.g. "fuck off, you bastard!"

and if you are quoting a single word or short phrase which, in my example, doesn't end a sentence, the 'period' should go OUTSIDE the quotation marks.

e.g. if i was quoting a portion of julio's reply above, it would be improper to write: 'in his sentence, julio used the word "generally."

the period is not in the correct place because the quote implies that the period immediately followed the word 'generally', which, of course, it did not.

what about a case where someone is quoting within a sentance as such

"I hate you all," he shouted, "you suck!"

is it in or out? (the comma)

What are the rules for single quotes of wise and honorable grammar god?

BTW, you may also have heard we spell some word differently over here. This may just be another cultural difference, like "neighbour" and "neighbor" and "Londoner" and "crooked teeth limey."

That should be "I hate you all!" he shouted. "You suck!"

fine, pretend it's an instance where the comma would be appropriate...

I'm pretty sure it would go outside, considering it's part of your sentence structure, not his statement.

Just because it actually makes sense doesn't mean it's a rule. It would be gramatically correct to put the period inside the quotes in your example. English can be stupid, but that's the rule.

The only exception being, if you are using the apa format of referencing....

"Blah Blah" (Freud, 1895).
