Whiteout with Jim O'Rourke - Drunken Little Mass

White Out is a sound terrorist collective of two, arising from the freedom charged excitement that is NY improv. drunken little mass marks the summit meeting between White Out and free agent, renaissance maestro Jim O'Rourke. The combustible duo of multi-instrumentalist Lin Culbertson on analog synthesizers, autoharp, flute, and treated voice; and Tom Surgal on drums, gongs and infinite percussion, join forces with O'Rourke, who contributes on both powerbook and guitar. The contents of this album are totally improvised, recorded in one take, with no overdubs or studio effects. The end result is impressive, the range of sound expansive, the interplay precise. Every note put forth was the combined effort of three performers working as one.

drunken little mass is a volatile work. It is at times delicate, at times raging, sometimes both simultaneously. One moment the music might lull the listener with its psychedelic space drone minimalism. The next moment could induce electric shock with its soaring distortion attacks. Culbertson and O'Rourke toil bravely to create an electronic collage like no other; while Surgal tirelessly accompanies with his unique brand of free drum association. The CD also contains two duo tracks recorded live in concert. Just imagine Phil Wachsman commandeering Sun Ra's mothership, en route to El Saturn, with stowaways AMM and Popul Vuh duking it out for cosmic domination.

Jim O'Rourke's credentials are so legendary they almost don't bear mentioning; suffice to say that he has worked with everyone from Takeisha Kosugi to Stereolab to Sonic Youth. Surgal and Culbertson have also performed with a wide array of other artists including: Mike Watt, Peter Brotzman, Charles Gayle, Beck, Cecil Taylor, Elliott Sharp, Nels Cline, Zeena Parkins and Thurston Moore. (The latter a long time collaborator of Surgal's with whom he has played with on a series of recordings and at a number of international festivals, including Victoriaville, Carnegie Melon, Vels, and Taklos to date.) White Out has appeared in the Roulette concert series, the Skif II and CMJ music festivals, and were recent guest artists of the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble.

Random_Inc - Walking In Jerusalem

Walking in Jerusalem is a walk through a city.

This is the second album in which German based Random_Inc. (former half member of Autopoeises) has experimented with sounds from Jerusalem (EFA 14870); but note much has changed since the last album. The conceptual separation between Jewish and Arabic sounds have gone, and Random_Inc. has invited other electronic musicians to add their own arrangements. Walking in Jerusalem will be released in two versions: a CD geared for more reflective listening and a vinyl version designed to rouse the dance floor with more progressive sounds.

Hailing from Melbourne, Ninetynine combine indie rock stylings with tuned percussion and layerings of casio keyboard to create a unique kind of pop music. Variously described as ‘wonderful’ (Melody Maker) and ‘versatile and talented’ (Rolling Stone) the band originally began as a solo project for Laura MacFarlane (the original drummer for Sleater-Kinney) in 1995. Ninetynine's self titled debut on Patsy followed soon after as well as tours of the U.S., New Zealand and Europe. In 1997 long time collaborator Cameron Potts joined the band just in time to appear on the release of the ‘767’ album on Patsy. Further tours of North America and Europe occurred in 1999 and 2000 in which Ninetynine toured such countries including as the U.K., Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, France, Switzerland, Canada, U.S., Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia and Finland. In 2000 Ninetynine released their third album ‘180 Degrees’ on Radio One and Patsy to local and overseas acclaim. The following year a rejuvenated line up appeared with Amy Clarke and Iain McIntyre coming in to assist on bass, vocals, guitar, keyboard and vibraphone. 2002 sees Ninetynine head into a 24 track studio for the first time with Lindsay Gravina at Birdland Studios (Magic Dirt, Rowland S. Howard). The result is their stunning new album ‘The Process’ set to be released on Trifekta Records on September 16th 2002

I actually expected it to be more distorted than it is, more merzbow-style, but it's still very good. I got my copy secondhand for real cheap so I couldn't resist picking it up

Gav,

I'd say it sounds like a mix of Slint & Tool. The vocals remind me of Prong. But it's not very song-oriented, it's more like Slint where you have multiple focus during a song.
