Once again, this should have been planned. The US has a long history of problems in warfare such as this. Vietnam anyone?

I am sure it was planned, maybe we just underesitmated the level of opposition, I think we thought that we had killed saddam, I believe alot of the crap going on right now is saddam striking back.

That's pretty fucking nice.
Now they face the same situation in Iraq, only without the help of the UN.
Actually the main reason we left was because of the black eye from BHD. I do not remember us losing several strategic battles.

Thats where we agree, we fucked up because we pulled out. We should have stayed the course.

To pull out now would be fucking suicide.

From what I'm reading so far, as long as you accepted Jesus in your life, you go to heaven. But there's some verse about "murderers will never have eternal life" or something, but that's kind of a stretch.
But doesn't it say that God sees all sins as being equal? I know that's what I was taught... but I was brought up as a protestant. I know Catholics don't believe the same, since they have mortal sins... and.. something else. I don't remember what they're called. But I think it's the mortal sins you have to confess for.

Speaking of the Bible.... Zach and I got into an arguement over some quote in the Bible last night and I pulled mine out (had to prove I was right ) and the Bible is crazy! In Levaticus it has this funky thing that Moses is telling the Israelites, that if two men are fighting, and the wife of one of the men tries to break them up by grabing the balls of the other guy, then she'll get her hand cut off!

And this other thing about if a guy dies, and he doesn't have any kids, his brother should marry his wife, but if he refuses, then she has to go to the town counsel, and they have to urge him to, and if he still refuses, then in front of the counsel, she has to spit in his face, take off his sandel, and from then on, all his generations will be known as "the man whose sandel was taken off"

It's so whack. Off topic for me. Aha.

You already have the biggest military in the world by far. Cutting the numbers a little to improve quality is what is important.

Yes, all sins are equal, but since Jesus died for our sins, if we accept him our slate is wiped clean. I'm not Catholic, so I don't believe in "confession" in the sense of talking to a priest... I talk to God every now and then and say "Hey, sorry for being an idiot"..

That's all the Old Testament. People had weird ways of life back then. The Old Testament is more of a history lesson than something to live by... The New Testemant pretty much cancelled out all the old Jewish laws (eating pork, etc)

Yes, BHD was the major reason, however there were similar cases on smaller degrees of soldiers being killed because they underestimated the power of the opposition.
I agree that pulling out of Iraq now would be the worse thing possible.
My point is that they should have planned to have the things that are occuring now, to happen.

Umm actually I believe our military is the 3-4th biggest in the world.

we have shrunk our numbers considerably over the last 20 years.

We CANT cut numbers any more, unless we decide to just protect our shores.

I think we are basically agreeing, you are saying we should stay..but we should have planned for this level of resistance.

I am saying we should stay, maybe they planned resistance, but did not expect it to be this severe.

Yeah, I know. I just found it amusing, it was so weird. It'd been yeeeeaaaaars since I'd last read the Bible.

In terms of size, China is larger (2.8 million), but that is because of the huge number of conscripts. They are also poorly trained and have little in the way of equipment.
Cutting numbers in your military is exactly what you need. What good are having thousands of troops who aren't able to fight anyways, and only joined for money?

Are you serious? We're shorthanded as it is. I have a friend who just got back from being in Afghanistan for a year, now he's gotta go to Iraq for a year. There are ALOT of people like that. Believe it or not, military people have families.

If the US didn't go off invading other countries all the time and instead protected the country like it is supposed to, you wouldn't have such a shortage. When you do invade a country, a large chunk of your forces have to go, and sometimes stay long periods of time. You can't just have people leaving for a few months and then being replaced.
I know all about military families, I'm from one.

*shrug* I don't agree with messing with other countries... I'm just saying that now, under the current circumstances, it would be foolish.

Besides, let's say we did majorly downsize... what would we do if another WWII happened?

You would have to put aside a small amount your "homeland" defences and would have the help of many other large militaries (I'm assuming).
this brings me to my original point:

Its a good thing this isn't world war three, or the US would be fucked.

Stay the course. get saddam, so it can get a little more peaceful, so allies would not be so afraid of putting in their troops.

Like it or not, as being the only superpower, we have a duty to this world to make sure everyone plays nice.

The US isn't the world's police force.
Just because you have the most powerful military in the world doesn't give you the right to enforce what you want.

The U.S. doesn't "play nice"!
Please don't make me give you a REAL history lesson (as opposed to the one taught in American schools)...

Question

And what the fuck do you mean you are the only superpower?
China is very close to giving the US a good run for its money and its economy is doing a lot better too, which can only lead to a stronger military.

they are horribly trained and ill equiped.
Give them 20 years and they will be a force to be reckoned with though.

I know there is no way to accurately prove how either army would perform against each other, but I think that they may be a far more effective force than you give them credit for.

Remember that even the most experienced pentagon military analyst would not have predicted the effectiveness of the tactics used against the US in both Vietnam and Iraq. This just shows how unpredictable these things can be.
The psychology of the enemy can have a far larger impact than equipment or training.
