Stephen Merritt appreciation/discussion post.

He's the Brian Wilson of the last 10-15 years. Absolutely amazing songwriter with an ear for unusual instrumentation/arrangements/production. My only (small) problem with him is that while I like his voice, his work seems much stronger/more beautiful when he has other people sing for him. Oh yeah, he writes some pretty great lyrics too.

i like it better when he sings.

for the most part, when LD or god forbid that what's her name with the nasal whine on 69 love songs sings it makes me want to hurt things.

that's the exception. mainly because of the strength of the lyrics. anyone of stephins entourage could sing it and it would be hard to mess up.
