Chicago, Goose Island Fest..
In the midst of a decaying urban wasteland, on the confines of a steel mill, I saw Sonic Youth unleash an awesome mix of new and old... Setlist: *noise* Rain on Tin Drunken Butterfly Skip Tracer riffs White Kross Skip Tracer The Empty Page Plastic Sun Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style Catholic Block Karenology Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream 100% Sympathy For the Strawberry encore: Peace Attack Making the Nature Scene Expressway to Yr Skull The previous night's show in Detroit (w/ the Stooges) had been cancelled due to power outages, so Sonic Youth were raring to go. There weren't any real surprises in the first set, but the band was really into it and the audience, especially in the front, were really into it. Mass pogoing ensued for Drunken Butterfly and White Kross, and later on during Catholic Block. Having seen them in June, I semi-expected them to play Catholic Block and they did not disappoint. Karenology was drawn out and almost orgasmic, as they stretched out the noise section to the depths of sanity. The encore was the real treat. First the awesome new song, Peace Attack (I recognized it, and was the only person cheering when they introduced it), then reaching back to Confusion is Sex for Making the Nature Scene, which got a huge reaction. Then...it looked like they were done...and then they unleashed Expressway to Yr Skull. It had been requested quite a bit during the show (by me, repeatedly) by a great deal of people in front, and they did not disappoint. The only description I can think when witnessing it was...it was jaw-dropping, orgasmic. A few people around me were freaking out, some were standing around, eyes closed...the audience was entranced. Awesome. One of the best shows I've ever seen. |

My boss kept me at work until 8:30 doing some travel arrangements for her. She's currently in Ireland and no one has a fucking computer over there. I spent 3 hrs looking for the cheapest flights from Dublin to London and vice versa. I missed the show.

I mean, if you know what Sonic Youth usually play live this ain't such a great set, IN THE SENSE that they always mix it up to something fucking exciting we got a few candies on here, of course, but it's normal for a Sonic Youth performance I've seen those incredible guys multiple times, if you saw them too more than once or twice you know what I mean |

I saw Sonic Youth twice this summer. The second was the show I reviewed in my original post. The first was this:
Sonic Youth-June 17, 2003, St. Louis, MO Peace Attack, Schizophrenia, The Empty Page, Rain on Tin, Eric's Trip, Plastic Sun, Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style, Kool Thing, Karenology, Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream, Catholic Block, Sympathy For the Strawberry encore 1: Disconnection Notice, Teenage Riot encore 2: Drunken Butterfly Dear God, that was an amazing show too. I lost it twice: Schizophrenia and Teenage Riot. Wow. I still think the second show was better though. |
