Default What's a really good variable bitrate encoder?

I'm looking to rip tracks from some CD's, and I heard variable bitrate mp3's are pretty good. What's a good, free program?

If you're serious about quality, use EAC equipped with the LAME codec.

When I extracted the LAME file, it had like tons of files in it. Which one do I put in the EAC folder?

What? It's just one file, lame.exe. You can put it anywhere, so long as you set the path in EAC

You can get it working in eac via 3 ways, exe on eac path, dll on eac path, or installing the acm version (like a codec) available to any other program that supports it. The best way is moving lame_enc.dll , then in eac's "compression options", select "LAME MPEG Layer-3 Encoder v3.93 DLL v1.32", on "file extension for headerless files" put ".mp3", and then on the "LAME DLL" tab use compression options, then back in the tab you were before, select bitrate.
