Get the San Quentin disc. They just re-issued it about a year or so ago with the complete concert on it. Good Stuff. Also, there is a 3 disc "best of" that is pretty cheep and covers the highlights most, if not all of his early career. I think it was called something like the "Columbia Years" or something along those lines.

It's called "The Essential Johnny Cash," but now there's a two disc set out of the same name that has the most of the hits on there.

Yeah, I'd vote for San Quentin, too, but there's nothing wrong with picking up a hits collection, either. Also, check out "Unchained," the second album under Rick Rubin's guidance. One of my favorites.
