one of my friends just conned me into going with her to see them perform live in September. I don't know anything about them.
I want to know whether or not I should bring something to read. specifically, recommend any noteworthy songs (if applicable). |

i think you'll have a good enough time. they're not the most engaging live band, but the music is good. they translate extremely well live.
as far as songs go, i'd check out pda, obstacle 1, and untitled. it's a pretty fair portrayal of the band. |

if you want to hear a distilled version of Joy Division with awful lyrics and poor production, by all means check them out.

If anything their lead musical influence is Television, the guitar interactions and stuff. Not to mention that Interpol's drummer will go nuts and Joy Div. kept it simple (thanks to Hannet). Plus in Interpol the bass is used in its traditional sense. |

I think there were plenty of albums that were better. Just to name 4 of them:
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, They Threw Us All..., Source Tags & Codes, Reveille. |

If Interpol could put the intensity of PDA, Obstacle 1--the beauty of NYC and Untitled--and the driving force of Roland for an entire album they'd have the best album of the year for sure.
Unfortunately they also made Say Hello to the Angels, Hands Away, the New. |

there is not one weak song on the album. every song got better with repeated listens.
my rankings (which have evolved greatly from listening to this album one billion times): 1. Stella was a diver and she was always down 2. Leif Erickson 3. Obstacle 1 4. Hands Away 5. Roland 6. Untitled 7. The New 8. Osbtacle 2 9. Say Hello to the Angels 10. PDA 11. NYC |

also:
the "2,2 leet" as prolly a sarcastic (or not?) comment of your musical snobbery since you named four indie albums (too, too elite). but yet as i think about it, it may have been an intentionally ironic comment since you named four very well known indie albums and may not have been that "leet" at all...eh, whatever- i dunno what kill radio star really meant.... |

I'm not really elite at all, I just can't really name a major label album that is better than Turn on the Bright Lights (not because I don't listen to them because I'm sure I do, but because I don't really pay attention to whether an album is on a major or not).

i just say random shit, ignore me.
i thought you were ripping on the mainstream nature of interpol but at the same time dropping 4 albums of similarly large status. maybe i should read more carefully ![]() Last edited by killed radio star : 08-05-2003 at 10:43 AM. |

I bought their cd like two days after it had come out, a friend of mine went on tour and found one of their EPs at a record store in Seattle and sebsequently fell in love with them.
I think they're pretty good, I'd probably see them if it was a reasonable price. I think they are another one of these bands who take a lot of influence from the 80's post punk/new wave stuff, but aren't imitations, like the strokes. What I mean although you can hear influences jumping out at you, this music only really fits in the context of modern times. If this band came out the same times bands like Joy Division did they wouldn't fit in. By the way, "Roland" is a good song, but I prefer the live version (Peel session or something like that, before they recorded totbl) which is a lot like the album version of "hands away", just more energetic. |

I have the album. It's fine and all, but, I don't know, I just find it kind of boring. I mean, it's not really all that interesting. I'm not sure exactly how to explain it, but it feels to emotionless. I can't say it was in my top 5 for last year, but probably in my top 10.

Interpol is a pretty divisive band since all the indie publications jizzed all over Turn on the Bright Lights, so honestly, asking people here is a pretty lousy proposition. You should go see 'em.
But since you did ask for songs: NYC, PDA, Obstacle 1 are by far the best. |
