i think this whole idea of wedding rings and huge receptions and all that is complete shit. if was going to get married to a girl who cared for all that pointless shit i wouldnt even marry her. dishing out 2 months pay or whatever does represent a lot, but theres no logic in it. its all just sentimental bullshit tradition

If you've found someone that you want to spend the rest of your life with, chances are she isn't the type of person that is going to "beg" for a large diamond. Three months salary is customary, and if you're too big of a fuck not to be able to manage that, fucking shame on you. Three months salary isn't really that big of a deal. It isn't going to break the bank, so to speak. A diamond is a symbol of your love and devotion. And usually a large diamond makes your significant other quite happy.

I've always had a long name. it never fit in the fuckign scantrons in elementary school. I come from a family of European entrepreneuers (fuck you, spellcheck) (restaurant owners, catering businesses, bed and breakfast owners, Cordon Bleu cooking instructors, whatever else involves cooking or hospitality or France), but I wouldn't call that old money. Someone way back was really smart with their business and has passed down business secrets, business contacts, and a financial head start (sometimes) in family businesses.

in other words, I'm just a first generation American kid with a long name and a flare for the feces. I don't even speak french like the rest of my family but I do like to cook

i understand and accept that sacrafice is a very pure way to show devotion and care but what im protesting is that it shouldnt have to be shown through money or size. yes, the cost or size of the diamond signifies the amount of sacrafice you have made, but when a girl demands that your love be shown through such pathetic and illogical means, it gets stupid. if i loved a girl and really wanted to have a symbol for our devotion or to let her know, there a million ways of doing it, the best of which wouldnt be blindly adopted as the only way. to me it fits in with the "tradition" section of life, which i completely dont believe in. flowers are very beautiful things and mean a lot, but i wouldnt dream of giving them to anybody i loved because that whole meaning itself has long been thrown out hte window. even saying the word love means shit these days, even if you mean it, because its been so overused and disgraced. so showing love and devotion is a wonderful thing, but travellingn through the traditional default avenue to me just deflates half the meaning.
