if I want cola I say coke. I order a coke and will get anything from RC to pepsi. as long as it's a cola. or maybe cherry coke. if I'm referring to soda drinks as a whole like 'wanna get a coke or something?' it's still coke. only after it is confirmed that we have something other than cola, only then is it soda. like 'we just went out to get some soda'
