Coke is coke. Sprite is sprite. You ask for them by name, and soda is the word used to describe the type of beverage they are.
Example:

"What kind of soda do you guys have?"
"pepsi, sprite, and dr. pepper"
"I'll have a sprite, please"

This is true when asking for specific drinks. However just going to get some carbonated beverages even my parents say “pop”. I say “pop” most of the time, but once in awhile I say “Soda” and then I get funny looks. "What are you, American?"

lol ... exactly ... wtf are they thinking? I think a lot of people are confusing the soda/pop question with asking what you call a cola drink. I'm canadian so I call it pop. If I'm in a restaurant and I want a cola sometimes I'll say, "I'll have a coke please" ... and if they only serve pepsi, they'll ask if a pepsi will do instead. Lot's of times I'll say "I'll have a pepsi." ... either way I expect a cola beverage. Sometimes I order a "orange pop" ... but I suppose "orange soda" would do. I always order root beer by name.
