Default For Martha appreciation thread

Phenominally gorgeous song that I just re-discovered...

I think the tone in Billy's voice sounds dead-on in the phrases nearing the end of the song...not too whiny, but maintaining balls.

Thoughts?

I too rediscovered it recently.

Actually, 'discovered' is nearer the truth, I had never discovered it before. When my grandfather died a few weeks ago - rather predictably - I couldn't stop listening to Adore. I would listen to the whole thing, thru and thru. For Martha is an amazing song I'm glad I finally gave a chance. It sounds a lot like Miles Davis, or Joe Jackson. It's really quite beautiful.

This whole new appreciation of songs I never really listened to has been happening a lot this year. It's like I'm slowly coming to like their entire catalogue. Songs I used to never listen to - Shame, For Martha, Starla, Plume, This Time, etc., I've found a new love for. Starla was the first, a long time ago.

I don't know if I can ever really appreciate Tales of a Scorched Earth though. I just don't know about that song.

I never used to listen to Shame also... It's one of my favorites at the moment! James did some great work on that one!

Great, great song. Its brutal live - I remember seeing it live and the entire place was practically silent because you could really tell how much emotion was in that song.

I remember first really listening to Adore in early 1999 when I came down with a brutal case of the flu and couldn't do much else for a week. I could just lay in bed and sort of chill out to the music.

Yeah, I remember seeing For Martha live as well. Watching Billy perform the song is a different experience when you know that there really is so much genuine emotion and personal meaning within it. And at that time I'm sure that Billy still felt the pain of losing his mother--it was still but a fairly recent memory. Presumably, enough time had not yet passed to where a certain disconnect could occur between the lyrics that he was singing onstage and the actual events that inspired them.
