No, he actually retired earlier this year. I remember seeing something on TV about it, it might have actually been last year. Either late 2002 / early 2003 but he wasn't in office when he passed.

any of you want to consider he was the first southern senator to hire blacks in his offices? he took the heat and turned it on those who stayed bigoted throughout the transformation of the civil rights era.

doesnt make him a saint, i realize, but you need the leading lights of the most radical of views to turn 180 and put pressure on his supportors to own up to the change. That's exactly what he did. He also flew in the 82nd Airborne division on D-day in WWII and was the first and only senator to ever be elected by write-in ballot.

Yeah well the blacks were still in a servant position. "Yes sah" is just as acceptable as "Yes massa."

George Wallace apoligized for what he had stood for, but it was only an effort to get votes.
