Arrow ST #119 - On Baseball

is there really a more perfect sport?

going out to a baseball game is just such an experience
i'm driving up to cincy (about 60 minutes' drive) tomorrow for the reds/yanks game and i'm so excited

i mean, i love football and it's my favorite sport and basketball is good for what it is but baseball is so perfect

the grass, the dirt, the crisp, clean uniforms, the fans, the openness of the park, the sunshine, the hot dogs, the beer (the strolling vendors, for that matter)...

baseball also has mysterious qualities (try to get a copy of Bradd Shore “Baseball”...great essay)...like, it's totally untimed, games could theoretically go on forever (a batter could foul a ball off forever, no runs could get scored to break a tie, perhaps)

what's netphoria's opinion on baseball?

baseball sucks and why is this a standard topic?

Baseball is only fun for drunk people/kids. I don't even think the players themselves like it (i.e. strikes).

Here's for seats stickier than movie theatres and entertainment far worse than the new star wars movies.

Baseball is #1.
Unlike all of the other sports (basketball, football, hockey), there's no clock, which means literally anything can happen. You're team is down by 5 in the 9th? You can still have a comeback. In the other sports the result is usually a foregone conclusion before the end.
Plus they play 162 games. The other sports are lazy.

Yeah, so can basketball (overtime).

It's not about the fact that the game can "last forever" it's about the fact that the adage "it aint over 'til it's over" is true. Anyone can come back.

Cricket is a sport for players that aren't good enough to play baseball.

Yes, watching 5 criminals and 5 thugs run 20 feet back and forth putting a ball through a hoop for 3 hours is much more exciting.

Baseball is more like a game than a sport. I'm extremely out of shape but it wouldn't be too difficult for me to go over the diamond and play for a couple hours. But if I were too play any of the other major north american sports I wouldn't last twenty minutes before the exertion takes its toll. And everything in baseball is so dependant on a single player (the pitcher) that it almost doesn't qualify as a team game.

Nor would it be difficult for you to play a pickup game of basketball with friends, or some touch football perhaps. I can see you've probably never played past Little League.

college sports in general, get the nod over pro. it's just sad to see the level of play in college sports (in football, basketball) dropping now a days with all the early entries to pro drafts.

basketball with friends is tough, maybe your friends dont play it to win, but mine do. One of my friends tore an ACL playing "a pickup game". So im guessing that un-fit guy probably couldnt. Touch football still involves constant running

While I'm no fan of the NBA, this statement is just dumb.

In a basketball game, the action is at least somewhat continuous. Baseball is just....slow. Too slow. I mean, listen to a game on the radio and listen to what the announcers are talking about. It's terrible. They can only talk so much about the game...because there's rarely anything going on. Five games into the season they were discussing who was in first place and if they'll be able to stay there and such... Uhm. My point. What was it...oh yeah, baseball is boring. Ooooh, anything can happen! There's still hope!! How old are you? 6?

And the 162-game season is certainly not a positive thing. Since it's not boring enough already, let's stretch it out so much that a team can go on a 38-game losing streak and still make the playoffs. I mean, really now. Every team plays almost every day. It's fucking annoying if you're not a fan. If I want to look at the bottom line thing on ESPN or whatever to find out the outcome of some other sporting event, I have to watch baseball scores scroll by for about 10 minutes. But that's irrelevant, so nevermind.

i'd love to see a MLB player play 40+ minutes of an NBA game, have 25+ carries in an NFL game, or skate 20+ in an NHL game.

i'll be you right now though, that an NBA/NFL/NHL player can stand out on the field and fetch a baseball.....and later swing at one.

I stopped following college sports as much as I used to because of a number of factors.
- good players leave after sophomore year
- too much turnover - teams ripped apart every year (see above)
- too much corruption
- players taken advantage of
- players given a free ride through educational system (I am OK with scholarships, but I went to school with a couple of players now in the NFL and NBA. Let's just say they didn't have to come to class or do assignments).

NO KIDDING! On one hand I wish there was a rule, on the other the primary reason they are there (yea right) is because they are students. Education is a privlige not a right, so they shouldn't be forced to stay.
