Question What is a good SAT score?

I was just looking at my unofficial transcript and I scored a 860.

Yeah. hmm. That's not good. I'm sorry.

But Eric on that 70's show got an 800 and Kelso got a 1000 and Donna still got engaged to Eric. not all is lost.

Look on the bright side: maybe the "official" transcript will show a 1280!

I took the ACT as a lark because I was going to a southern school and they mainly use the ACT. I wasn't sure what a good score was on that at all. I felt bad when the result was 35, but then I found out that wasn't bad.

I got 1430 on the SAT.

i would consider decent anything over 1000

but a really good score is about a 1400 or so

as an editing note, undergraduate schools are getting ridiculous re: SAT's; kids are getting much higher scores than they used to, i guess because when i applied for college, a 1200+ would easily get you in at most schools and maybe some scholarship $ if you had a good GPA but NOW, at least at my undergrad school, you need a 1300+ and a GREAT GPA to even get in

1280. 20 away from the one requirement I had left to hit for the U of MT's presidential scholarship.

1200 or more is good enough to get into almost any school in the country.

I'm not sure, but I also think 1200 qualifies for National Merit Scholar.

Actually, schools do look at the SAT. They don't base it on that, but they do usually look.

In TN you didn't have to take the SAT, just the ACT. I took the SAT just for the hell of it.

I think it's a southern thing.

Having taken them both, the ACT is MUCH easier.

i think that's so strange when people say that (i've heard that before though)

at college, most of my friends had taken both (because they sucked i guess...just kiddin) and it was totally split on which was harder

one of my friends got a 27 on the ACT and a 1420 on the SAT
my g/f got a 32 on her ACT but "only" a 1280 on the SAT

it's weird

Unless you wanted to go to college in the deep south, you did.

unless you're some sort of extracurriculars superstar (read: bumblefuck) or if the school's your daddy's alma mater, 1200 won't get you into most top tier schools.

national merit scholarships are awarded based on your PSAT score.

the fact that you don't know these things makes me skeptical that you got a 35/1430.

You're a jackass.

The fact that I haven't taken the PSATs in 14 years is why I don't happen to recall which one qualifies one for NMS.

As for the 1200+ score, depending on the rest of your qualifications it should be enough. My recruiter from Dartmouth told me point blank that with the rest of my credentials a 1200 would get me in.

Also I said "most schools" not every single school (MIT, etc).

Please think before you make stupid accusations.

Yeah, volunteering hundreds and thousands of hours of my time to lead a volunteering group and volunteering for environmental and child needs in my local community, and taking music and putting in all of my extra time into my high school yearbook made me a total bumblefuck.

What were you, the smelly stoner drop-out?

I don't even remember what I got on the SATs. I just remember that my verbal was almost a perfect score and my math was an average score. I would say that anything above 1100 is a pretty decent SAT score.

sorry, I didn't realize anybody who is 14 years removed from their sophomore year of high school posts at netphoria. and my claims were exactly with regard to the idea that the SAT score is the sole factor getting one into the door, because of lack of any other credentials.

btw, i couldn't find the numbers, but i'd guess that 1200 is probably below the 25th percentile of SAT scores in the current dartmouth student body. you can say it's increased competition (more people are going to college these days), but you can also partly blame score inflation- a 1200 14 years ago is not equal to a 1200 today (you can find conversion charts at collegeboard.org probably).

no, i'm the valedictorian of a class of 772, who won a national merit scholarship and had a 35 ACT/1540 SAT, 800 math iic SATII, 800 writing SATII, and 700 physics SATII and had above average extracurriculars participation who got rejected from nearly every school i applied to because i didn't do the thousands of hours of volunteer work that the bumblefucks i was referring to did. i have nothing against people who do things out of their good nature (like you, i presume), but i have serious problems with the bumblefucks (read: unscrupulous over-achievers looking for any leg up on the competetion) who do volunteer work only because it looks good on their college apps. the dean of admissions of harvard, himself, issued a statement a couple of years ago decrying the ridiculous state of college admissions today- namely, the fact that kids these days aren't pursuing extracurriculars out of passion, but out of perceived obligation. he all but went as far as making a plea for kids to stop volunteering and start masturbating more and playing more videogames in their freetime.

sorry if i pissed anyone off. yes, i'm bitter.

I was hated by the majority of the "popular" people in my class who were there for the free resume filler, but oh fucking well.

I think what sucks most of all, is that i did more than my fair share of extracurricular shit AND my grades and classes were above and beyond, but the only reason I didn't get any scholarships (read: any) is that my step father, who claims me on his taxes yet does not want to pay for my education, makes $200,000/year. I was automatically disqualified from virtually every scholarship because I was not in "financial need." And now I am going to go to some community college just so I can make my way up to a real university, when I was accepted to ever single school I applied to. (And yes, some of them were hard to get into.)

That is not fair.

The spot that I could have deserved in full probably went to some kid in the projects who fucked off his entire high school career.
