I have a Californian sort of accent, but I still have a touch of the ole Oregonian in me too. I don't say "warshing machine" like my dad, though!

anybody know the reasoning behind accents?
id guess theyre remnants of influence on english from whichever cultures settled the region. theres a neat dialect map here as well as a good breakdown of why areas sound the way they do, and then theres enough us dialect related links here to keep you busy forever. mhm.

typical american, btu my britsh ********** still makes me say things like "lit-tra-ly" instead of "lit-er-al-ee" and other such words. So your basic Oregonian-American with some Britsh annunciation thrown in.

I'd venture a guess at Pennsylvanian, since that's apparently an accent, though I absolutely do not at all say anything for which Pittsburghers are noted.

I also apparently have a faint Canadian accent, which is really strange considering I've only been to Canada three or four times.

Upper Midwestern
Originally settled by people from New England and New York State who brought those dialects, this area was also influenced by Southerners coming up the Mississippi River as well as the speech patterns of the German and Scandinavian immigrants and the Canadian English dialects from over the border. It's sometimes referred to as a "Midwestern twang." They call jelly doughnuts bismarks. Minnewegian (Minnesota / Norwegian), a subdialect spoken in the northernmost part of this region was spoofed in the movies Fargo and Drop Dead Gorgeous

mmm hmmmm.
and i thought everyone called them bismarks..:erm

Very, very Californian.. so I'm told.
Though I do get teased quite a bit by my friends for overpronouncing my a's. For instance, my brother's name is Alan & sometimes I draw out the first "a" & make it kind of nasally. I don't know why... I also pronounce the "g" at the end of words like "King" so it comes out sounding like "King-uh" it's kind of retarded but I don't know how to stop.

When I was a kid I had to take speech courses so I could pronounce my r's. It was silly; I lived in California my whole life & sounded like I was more from Brooklyn. "Mom, can I have some toikey?"

There was some word I need to start saying properly... appreciation, that's it. As in 'a-pree-see-ay-shon' instead of 'a-pree-she-ay-shon' like I do now. I don't know about my accent - ask Shannon
Yours isn't even a normal Manc accent, from what I heard of people speaking on the streets. I can't even begin to describe it!

I have a dorky Texas accent. Yes, I say "y'all", "fixin to" instead of "going to" and "fer" instead of "for" - but I'm ok with that.
