See, I actually agree with you there. It's like George Carlin said about people policing language. But I stopped being a liberal a bit ago (no I didn't become conservative, I just moved farther left) and find some of my old stances silly.

where do we think the alt-right ideology fits in on this chart, and how would we differentiate it from other recent conservative movements? it's interesting to me because in 30 years we've gone from neoconservatism being the mainstream conservative ideology, to Tea Party "libertarianism," to the alt-right Trumpsters. Economically, these shifts have been bipolar. Where the cohesion seems to be is socially, where all these ideologies subvert non-whites and have an element of white nationalism. For the Reagan/Bush neocons and for the Tea Partiers, their disdain for non-white America and nostalgia for the glory days of white supremacy were the subtext of these ideologies, but now the subtext has become the text.

It's just interesting to see this transformation in conservative America, which ostensibly has required a lot of loyal Republicans to continually shift their own narrative while staying focused on maintaining racist structures. Liberals seem to have a much more linear progression in recent decades, with progressives slowly splitting off from neolibs. and moving further left on both economic and social issues.

I would say many of the alt-right think they are in the purple, and would get results in the purple if they took the test (I'm basing this on the results of some alt-right posters who took the test on my NBA message board. Lots of racist ass posters on that board, which is ironic for a sport dominated by African Americans). In reality, they're pretty deep into the blue. The thing about Trump is he presents himself as a populist, but he does the same economic right-wing bullshit Bush did. He hasn't started a war yet at least though.
