I can see not eating certain animals because we perceive their intelligence and emotional complexity to be too high (e.g. I feel bad about eating pigs), but I do not get the "that animal is too cute to eat" phenomenon.

I've never been able to eat any kind of shellfish. It's not an allergy, it's like if it goes in my mouth my brain reflexively wants to get it out. Like if you put a toenail in your mouth.

My dad and my sister are the same. We've also never been too keen on most kinds of fish, either. Can't stand the smell, for one thing.

Crab is a pain, to me. One of Singapore's specialty dishes is chili crab, and it's good, but...all the work involved in smashing open the shell, with all the implements, and having to wear a glove, to eat my food, and still wash all the excess oil and chilli off my hands

It's delicious but I don't know if it tastes that good because of how much you have to pay for it and the work that you have to put into getting the meat out. Maybe it's a sunk costs kind of deal where I'm convincing myself it's delicious because otherwise I might as well have stood in line for 30 minutes and set some cash on fire.

one time when i was really poor i went to a food pantry about once a month and one time they gave me some frozen beef liver. i was all like... uh ok i'm gonna fuckin make some liver! but when i defrosted it and was about to cook it i just couldn't do it. my brain just identified it as human and rejected any idea of eating or cooking it. like i've eaten liver before, mostly chopped liver (jew food) and i would eat it cooked if someone made it or something. but i just couldn't get over that when i saw it raw

I didn't eat duck or lamb until I was an adult because to my mom, such animals were too cute to eat. Same with deer. Like she would literally feel bad if my dad ordered duck when we were out at dinner because the idea of eating duck upset her so much. But simultaneously, we were a meat-eating family who consumed way more chicken, beef, and pork than is healthy, just like most Americans, and she never felt bad about that, and purposely avoided information about the suffering of factory farm animals and stuff like that.

So I grew up and it just became a symbol to me of hypocritical white middle class no-responsibility make-me-feel-good ethics. It makes no sense, but in her twisted reality, she was doing a good thing for animals by not eating the duck

yeah once i got a couple of steaks from a pantry. i didn't know what to do with them but i was starving so i tried frying them. threw most of it away it was so nasty and the apartment smelled like burned flesh for ages afterwards.
