This is just like cherry picking hack scientists who form 1% of the scientists that deny climate change.

fuzzy if you hadn't dropped out of high school you might have developed the critical thinking skills necessary to identify biased sources

My younger son has mentioned a few times that he wishes he could be a woman, that if he could invent any technology it would be a gender changing machine, that women get to do all the best things like give birth and look after babies. He chose a pair of women's frames at the optometrist and just today he called out "I built a rocket! It's rainbow colours to support gay marriage!"

If he wants to be adore if he is really a woman then of course who cares, my child is my child.

But I agree with fuzzy a little. My biggest concern as a parent is his mental health and I think there are plenty of options to explore in the mean time and would never consider hormone therapy or anything.

At the moment I encourage him just to be himself and not worry too much about what women do and what men do because for now he has to put his plates in the sink and learn his 7 times tables, and do his assigned reading and his trumpet practice.

I respect that. I agree with Fuzzy's stance on this. And yours.

You do you.

but, for real, telling kids at a young age that gender is malleable would confuse them. a lot. instead, just tell them to be themselves and respect most people the way they are.

So, I feel kinda judged, like people think I'm not 'good enough' as a parent, because I haven't taken him to be assessed and explored hormone therapy and stuff.

I believe in honest responses to genuine questions, so he understood about sex when he was 5 because he persistently asked questions about it. I give as much information as my children ask for.

It wasn't long afterward that he asked about changing genders so I explained hormone therapy and reassignment surgery and he's known about that for a couple of years. He understands the difference between biological sex and gender.

So it's very possible that at 9 years old, he understands himself and his world enough to be telling me an unchangeable truth about himself when he says he wants to be a woman. I know that. But I still feel 9 years old is too young for us to be taking any steps in that direction. Maybe 18? I dunno.

There's every chance it will be nothing, too, you know? Kids are whack, they think and say and believe all sorts of shit. It's actually impossible to know what the right course of action is, raising kids. We're all just fumbling around in the dark trying the best we can.

it's actually cool you taught your kid.

I, honestly, don't care for transgenderism. It just goes ahead and widens the gender gap.

Which is not to say I don't respect transgender people. I'll respect anyone who deserves it.

I'm not an expert on this or anything, but saying certain traits are to be assigned to females and some to males does widen the gap. you could be a man with mostly feminine qualities, no biggie.

I think that's totally reasonable. If I had a child going through something similar, i'd certainly not put them through anything that could interfere with their natural growth.
It's best to keep an open dialogue, support them in their choices and give emotional support when they get bullied at school or attacked for being "different" (which surely will happen at some point).

Also not all transgender people desire sex reassignment.

But that's society as a whole who does the distinction. It's guys telling guys what is "manly" and women telling girls to be "a lady" and even people themselves will bully others and attack them for whatever they perceive to be a deviation from the "norm"

Transgender people are all about people expressing themselves in whichever way they choose regardless of gender and sex.

Yeah I'm waiting for the day he comes home in tears.

He's pretty resilient though. He's worn glasses since he was three, had a speech delay, was late to read, and now has been diagnosed with epilepsy.

Damn right! I am feminine as fuck and proud of it.

I am going to go listen to shoegaze and twirl/skip/prance around in my empty apartment with breaks to comb my hair.

About a year. The seizures are completely controlled with epilim thankfully. He has a fantastic paediatric neurologist here in SG and a great paediatrician in Sydney so although we spend a small fortune on his medical bills, prescription lens swim/sports goggles, sunglasses, speech therapy...we are so grateful to be able to afford it and that he is OK

If he feels like he is a woman then I am just glad that I will have a child who is alive and healthy.

But with all the intervention he's had for acute problems I really don't want to do any other sorts of chemical therapy

i'm not wholly against that opinion, there does need to be more science on the issue, but ultimately something is not better because it is "natural" and just like homosexuality, it is probably not a choice but even if it was who the fuck cares @ fuzzy

as far as children getting hormone therapy, i think it may be appropriate in some cases. sometimes kids REALLY insist they are the opposite sex, as opposed to sort-of wishing they were. if they insist and go through labor to look and act like the opposite sex without hormone therapy, it think it could be warranted. you have to be careful, but little kids who insist they are the opposite sex and get mad when you use the wrong pronoun and by themselves dress like the opposite sex and get really freaked out when puberty starts because it is not who they really are... in that case, i think it might be warranted

as far as children getting hormone therapy, i do not know the procedure one must go through but i don't think it's a matter of the kid or parent noticing they play with "boy" toys. shit isn't done willy-nilly. and i challenge you to show statistics that more than a tiny percentage of people who have irreversible therapies or surgeries done regret it
pretty sure people won't come out publicly and say that they're ashamed of it...

And, yeah, sorry. I'm glad to know he's doing better. I've a cousin who was diagnosed with epilepsy too.

I didn't know that. That's interesting. You know my son wrote that profound basketball poem so he is well on his way.

Yeah I can't even pretend to understand a situation like this. I have never read about one, but given my kid's curiosity I'd be interested, if you know of any off hand.

All that said, i'm pretty sure my life would've been a lot better if I had been born as a well endowed greek hunk and regularly bathed my statuesque body in the mediterranean.
Would work at a sea-side bistro and dedicate my life to spicing up the vacations of married female tourists.
