depends how you define elitist. my high school was like 15% white and out of that 15% there were probably 5 other kids who knew rock music that wasn't either the beatles/zeppelin or the killers/rhcp. I got told I was a music nazi a lot because virtually everything around was top 40 music and hip hop and I hated both. that's when I wanted the girlfriend who was more punk rock.

my real elitist years were between 17-19 or so when other people started to catch up to me in being into indie rock and slightly not mainstream bands. that's when I was all like omg bad music literally hurts my ears omg I can't go to that party the music will be lame omg why are people still listening to emo omg bad tastes are a threat to the health of our cultural consciousness omg I feel the need to make popular music some kind of personality litmus test slash political ideology.

then I went to sleep away college and got edumacated and realized how much of a stupid asshole I sounded like making actual judgements about people and life based on their personal taste. I guess I also finally figured out that the world is vast and there is a lot to take in and see, and the smaller your framework of acceptance is, the more you are limiting yourself and that will lead to frustration, missed experiences and understandings, and unhappiness. I also figured out people with very concrete, closed judgements about things like people's tastes or their lifestyles are primarily motivated by needing that thing as a personal identifier, as in it is very important they present the right rhetorical message so they will be perceived correctly by others, as in a fashion statement.

went to therapy
went to mom's because that's where my car was and waited for the tow truck
while waiting read for about two hours about the history of torture, slavery, real life violence as entertainment, witch trials, debtor's prisons, wars between nation-states, and the somewhat abrupt decline of all of these starting in about the 1800s (besides wars, which took until after WWII). really interesting stuff. also talked a bit about the rise of democratic republics and attributes a lot of the progress to ideas penned by Immanuel Kant. i really like this book we're reading for class. it's like 800 pages and the font is about 8 point but it's so easy to read
