In this city we actually are. To buy the shithole that we live in, we'd need just under two million dollars. We're a 40 minute train ride from the city.

Sydney is often ranked in the top 10 most expensive cities to live in. We need an income of around $350k to be comfortable here.

Foreign investment in real estate has pushed up prices to such an extent that a lot of people coming of age now, have no hope of ever owning a house in Sydney. Not just in nice areas, but even in shitty ones. The median house price hovers around a million dollars.

When you're raising children you have to take financial hits here and there for the betterment of your offspring. Someone can live in a nice area and be living poorly.

Grow up Scotty, you're a child.

Vix, you can complain about the cost of living in the city you choose to live in without constantly pretending that you're impoverished. You aren't.

I know people that live in San Francisco, New York and Chicago that have lower incomes (relative to yours) and despite living in very expensive cities none of them ever goes out of their way to call themselves poor.

well I imagine bonnie is in much the same situation - nice commuter towns in NJ are no cheaper than Sydney.

You pretty much have to do what she's done - find your life partner young and buy something small in your mid-twenties, and then get on the building equity and upgrading ladder until you have the house you want, then start having children at 35, perhaps with the help of IVF, and then service your mortgage by putting your child in childcare at 6 months old so that you can keep commuting and earning a salary.

If you don't do it this way, there's no real hope, unless, like friends of mine, your parents have set aside shares for you to cash in when you're ready to buy a house. An extra $400k for your deposit can really help.

I know I'm not impoverished, but it's good to be reminded. In terms of incomes in this city, we're probably in the lower half so it's hard not to feel poor. We have magazine style mansions all around us and all the kids go to private schools rather than the local public, so relative to them we feel poor sometimes. But I know that things could get a lot worse. We have never been truly poor even though there have been many times when we've had no disposable income because of our expenses.

When we first moved here my husband started on $57k and we still managed - but life was a lot cheaper with a 3yo and a newborn. Now that the kids are 8 and 11....they are so, so expensive. And it's just going to get worse.

In retrospect, having kids in our mid twenties was not a sensible choice, financially. We missed out on that all important DINK stage. On the plus side, birthing and breastfeeding was much easier because my body wasn't (medically speaking) geriatric.

I don't have a life plan rly. Where I live is 2 hours from NY by train but I am one of the many that does the commute (probably not forever). M and I could only afford NYC, which is the most like Sydney cost of living wise, if one of us got a raise. We live comfortably and within our means. Living out here is more about quality of life than being close to the city. It's expensive for the rest of the US but cheapish for central NJ/somerset county.

It doesn't sound like any of these activities will actually cost you anything. You're along for the ride with the children, just sucking up someone else's money. The only difference is that you've got some years on the children. Maybe you kids can play in the same room with the same toys.

I went to public school and did boring things. Being frugal is all my parents could do for me to grow up where I did. I wasn't very appreciative and I hated living in such a boring place so I decided if I am ever a parent to live somewhere with a bit more strife and diversity. Walk to school instead of buses and all that. I'd more than willingly pay for music lessons and academic help though

Everyone thinks they can manage others' money and livestyles though. My mom and I do this all the time and criticize people we know that spend $12 on a lb on mashed potatoes or $150/hr+ tutoring or other bad financial decisions. I've criticized my parents for wasting their money too.
