did you read Stephen King as a kid?

My kid went to an English coaching class on the weekend (long story) and when he came out he said

1. yeah, I'd keep going to that
2. can you get me IT to read?

I was like, I dunno, you're only eleven and IT is kinda for grown ups.

He's like "That's what we read in there." He gave me the excerpt and it was Stan committing suicide after getting the phone call.

Made me think about when I started reading Stephen King and I suppose it was about the same age.

when I was in 7th grade a read a Dean Koontz book about a genetically engineered dog with human-like intelligence and it was definitely the most "adult" book I had read. After that someone told me he's just a poor man's Stephen King and I read The Stand, some Dark Tower books, and some others too which I can't remember right now. I'm not exactly a model of mental health but I doubt Stephen King had much to do with my problems.

I read Jurassic Park in 6th grade and that was definitely an adult book. Most kids at that age are still reading Goosebumps and shit like that.

Hmmm that's a tough one ... is the kid really sensitive? I doubt it's gonna turn him into a killer space alien that looks like a big dumb stupid spider (srslyz IMO 1 of king's worst ever Final Reveals in a career chock full of let-downs) but might give him nightmares if he's at all afraid of predatory half-decayed sex ghosts

Stephen King writes pop fiction, no question there. But he's a talented dude and he does have some good books and a few modern classics. Dark Tower is pretty cool, it's not quite like anything else I've read.

His writing level is probably about 7th/8th grade

I read a couple Stephen King books around 12, 13. But what really got to me back then was reading Frankenstein and Interview With The Vampire, those really stuck with me.

Also I loved Jack London's Call of the Wild, I had to read it for 8th grade and loved it a lot.

Stephen King also has a book about writing in which he talks about his own life and career as a writer twisted together with a lot of advice and encouragement for up-and-comers, and I would actually really recommend it to anyone interested in writing fiction or otherwise.

King is "typecast" as a horror writer but that's a super limited perspective on him. I mean I'm not saying he's a great writer, but he does have a lot to offer in the same kind of way as J.K. Rowling or other good pop writers, and shouldn't just be written off because of whatever stigma is there

I lost interest in the middle of Dark Tower 4 (I think, which ever one was the 600 page flashback). It totally interrupted the narrative flow and I was just super frustrated I had to read this entire huge detour book to learn what happens after the previous one.

Harry Potter continued to get better until the last book so

People complain about the ending which I thought was fine what sucked was the final fight being decided by an asspull introduced not 2 or 3 chapters earlier
