Yeah, not divorced as we werent married, but together for 7 years with two daughters. I'm still getting used to it, I see the kids every weekend as my ex works weekends, so that's working out ok.

Ooooooh David Gilmour ... his general philosophy of "less notes, more emotion" just wins every tiem. I'd rather hear DG sting, bend, wobble, moan, topple, and croon on just a scant pocketful of notes for 10 mins than the entire recorded history of blistering fast rock solos

I've seen the big lebowski and dazed and confused. both overrated in my opinion, though i found dazed and confused to be not good at all and lebowski to be good but not legendary. im a pleb, clearly.

As a person and a poster, I am sentimental to a fault, overly earnest, generally humorless, and cheesy. Just like the legendary jam by bill patty corgan, "run2me."

that's just an example i'm not saying those are the two choices. in fact that example is overly vague and i'd ask you to be more specific e.g. what concept of worthiness would you go by
Well I basically adhere to utilitarianism as the soundest, most reliable moral code. I like it because it attempts to quantify morality, and to a certain extent I do think this is possible. I don't necessarily believe that the greatest common good is the only worthwhile moral value, but when in doubt if something is wrong (or just if it's the best course of action) it is probably a good idea to think about who is being helped and harmed by an action. It's a good quick and dirty litmus test of the moral value of an action. I'm not sure if I am answering your question though. It's fairly easy to think of situations in which utility does not sit well with most people morally (although I think in real life the commonality of situations which make utility look bad as a moral value are not so much).

Of course utilitarianism doesn't necessarily mean 2 lives are worth more than 1 life in an absolute sense anyway. It seeks to quantify pleasure and pain. So if there are three people dying of thirst, but 2 are octogenarians and the other is 20 and in otherwise good health, and you can either save either both seniors OR the single whipper snapper, there is a case to be made for saving the young person as opposed to the people who are already most likely near the end of their lives.

Funny you should go with this question because I only accept payment in untraceable stolen gold.

Well I think common sense exceptions to utilitarianism doesn't really nullify its principals, as you've said. It's not that there can be no standards to where one life is worth more than another, it just has to be based on logic and not morals. And I think that's where people get hung up, like in your example lets say it was two murderers vs one non-murdering good guy. Utilitarianally (is this a word?) speaking, the two murderers should live, but many people would have qualms with that and I think I would have at one time as well... now I'm not as sure. But then what if the two murders would go one to kill others? Obviously it's tricky.

I guess my interest in asking you the question is to see if your morality has changed like mine has. Which is basically going from universal, to relative, and sort of back to universal again. Of course it's a false choice paradigm but anyway, thanks for answering

I'm still not 100% sure what you mean by universal morality. I think you are talking mainly in terms of the value of human life though? I'm not sure I've ever thought that all human lives are truly equal in terms of their value to society or to others. But I do think the sacred value of all life is an important moral principal which should be observed unless there is absolutely no other path to avoid greater suffering (e.g. it's never ok to kill a criminal or a wrongdoer unless that individual's death is the ONLY way the lives of others can be protected from that person).

I used to be into ideas of moral objectivity (natural law and other enlightenment era nonsense, early american political philosophy, universal rights) but when I was around 20 I got into Marx and Mill, and accepted the deterministic universe, and basically did a 180 and embraced postmodernism. Nothing means anything, morality comes from us not from outside. Now I'm focused on how postmodernism ideologies have ultimately failed to inform us or transform society in meaningful ways... Although it is philosophically most easy to assume a universe with no TRUTH and it was comforting for awhile that there is no right way, it also opens the doors to people like Trump and his supporters who think they can make something true by saying it enough times, because truth is ultimately determined by what people believe, not an objective outside universe.

So I don't really know what I think now.

I say go ahead an have a pity party, but only if you think you will feel catharsis from it, not if it will make you feel worse.
