It's a shame it's usually angry Europeans who know the most languages. I have strategical questions but these people are simply unapproachable.

i fucks with cheese.

check out my new sticks, by the way:

got a metronome, too, for practicing hitting in time. now all i need is a practice pad -or a damn kit already. practice pads were no less than $40 at guitar center so i'm gonna check the internet first. last night i was just tapping on a pad that houses my tablet for school.

i've made fresh mozz a few times. my wife recently made a chevre, and perhaps most notably due to the time and added complexity, a camembert. it was all great.

that means your hands were on every inch of cheese. i like that.

so how would you rate what you made in comparison to stuff you've bought?

granted, i haven't ever done side-by-side comparisons, but i think it's just as tasty as store bought.

that's the case for everything homemade, though. the satisfaction of having made it from scratch far outweighs any minute taste discrepancy. unless you totally fuck it up, of course.

Weird how the Old Chat thread has failed to supersede the New Chat thread.

Anyway, yo Reprise, this may interest you. I just went to a talk by social psychologist Dr. Julia Shaw, who researches memory. It was in support of her new book, The Memory Illusion. She talks about things you've probably encountered in your courses, like the fallibility of human memory and how easily it can be distorted due to different cognitive biases.

I've skimmed through one of the experiments she co-authored with Dr. Stephen Porter in which they successfully implanted fake memories in subjects. They were able to convince 70% of subjects that they committed some crime in their youth1.

This is probably also relevant to your interest in criminal justice. It seems to be that police officers and the legal system in general have very outdated folk conceptions on how memory works and the quality of evidence it provides, relying on using leading questions and the Reid method to extract confessions from suspects, placing lots of weight on eyewitness testimony, and overestimating their "instinctual" ability to detect deception.

It will probably be forever before I actually get to read her book, because my course load is pretty heavy this year and I will be reading a lot as it is. Maybe I'll get to it next summer. Got her to sign it .

1. Shaw, J., and S. Porter. "Constructing Rich False Memories of Committing Crime." Psychological Science 26.3 (2015): 291-301. Web.

Yes, those topics definitely interest me. The other thing about memory is that, it's reconstructed. So every time you remember something, you're really remembering the last time you remembered it. Which leads to a whole host of other cognitive biases that could come into play (whatever your defense mechanisms were then, plus what they are now). And don't get me started on false confessions and unreliable eyewitness testimony.

I took a police psychology course last summer and we learned about those two topics in great detail. It's unfortunate, but the vast majority of police interviews involve cops who have only been trained the equivalent of what I learned this summer. It would make sense if police at least consulted with a forensic psychologist during the interview process, but in practice it basically never happens.

I don't find it surprising that they were able to implant false memories. My bigger question is how easily it happens when someone isn't doing it on purpose (e.g., controversies about remembered child abuse possibly being fabricated in therapy due to incompetent therapists). I'm sure it's possible and has happened, but some people contest that a lot of the claims are false memories remembered in this way.

I personally have had the experience of suddenly remembering a memory I'd forgotten. Stuff I was able to verify with someone else, mostly. So I definitely believe entire periods of memory can be repressed. I had repressed, for example, a week-long trip I took to Oklahoma when I was with my ex where we met up with some old friends he had. I don't even remember it as a traumatic thing - but I'd forgotten it completely, until I remembered it.

It's definitely an interesting field.

it's not absolutely groundbreaking, but it's good that there's some proper research about it.

why isn't self-defense taught in school? I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Instead of wasting time in PE learning what a shuttlecock is and naming the parts of a baseball bat, why don't children have to take a semester of self-defense every year from kindergarten up?

I'm not sure why this suddenly occurred to me, but think about how ridiculous it is that we all walk around living in fear of crime and shit, but virtually no one knows even basic self-defense?

i would assume, because kids have trouble restraining themselves and when you put this perceived sense of power in their hands, they are more likely to get into fights and incorporate possibly dangerous endeavors that they had learned into their play.

I guess I can see that, but IME the amount of kids who want to put their hands on each other and start fights and do stupid shit is so large already, it seems like we might as well be giving them the tools to defend themselves from attackers/bullies

The only advice I ever got from school was to not react and just hand over my belongings when being robbed.

I would not ever fight back over someone stealing my wallet or something, but we live in a world where people are sometimes attacked just because. I feel like it is especially important for females to know how to fight back if they are attacked. Something like 1 out of 3 women in the US will be sexually assaulted in their lifetimes.
