Aren't we still waiting for you to explain how being transsexual is unscientific?

I mean I sort of agree with this but I think if you've known since before kindergarten you were really the other gender and have been of that mind for years and years you can probably tell at 15 if it will continue to be an issue for the rest of your life. Many children who have gender dysphoria don't have it severely enough or long enough to actually want to change genders. It's not like "little Suzie likes playing with trucks let's go start her - I mean him - on testosterone treatments."

I was trying to find data about regret after transition surgery but it seems to be extremely rarely done under 18 years old and they are only just beginning to start longitudinal studies to see long term results. So there's no data. There is some data on adults that show the vast majority of people who have reassignment surgery don't regret it.

It's amazing how horrible trans people's lives are. Suicide and murder victim rates off the charts.

I was hoping this was going to be a CW review on the movie/band/play or art house project called millennial apathy.

RESULTS:

The overall mortality for sex-reassigned persons was higher during follow-up (aHR 2.8; 95% CI 1.8-4.3) than for controls of the same birth sex, particularly death from suicide (aHR 19.1; 95% CI 5.8-62.9). Sex-reassigned persons also had an increased risk for suicide attempts (aHR 4.9; 95% CI 2.9-8.5) and psychiatric inpatient care (aHR 2.8; 95% CI 2.0-3.9). Comparisons with controls matched on reassigned sex yielded similar results. Female-to-males, but not male-to-females, had a higher risk for criminal convictions than their respective birth sex controls
The study also showed that people who've transitioned have relatively higher mortality due to cardiovascular disease and cancers (though cancer is only borderline statistically significant). Can we then conclude that sex assignment surgery causes heart disease? Or is it more likely that people who have such hardships have an increased mortality rate in general because of all that comes with it - mental illness, isolationism, increased stress, more interpersonal problems, etc?

The suicide rate for all transgender people is higher than the general population. So it's not surprising that it holds true after transition. It doesn't make problems magically disappear. The real test would be a longitudinal study of transgender people, some who have surgery and some who want to but don't, and then see which group as better outcomes.

Also, the biggest problem is this: "Other facets to consider are first that this study reflects the outcome of psychiatric and somatic treatment for transsexualism provided in Sweden during the 1970s and 1980s."

Care and societal acceptance of transgender persons is so much different than it was in the 70s and 80s. I don't think we can accept data from that long ago in this specific case because of how different the world is particularly related to treatment of transgender persons.

lol this compares people with gender dysphoria who underwent sex-reassignment to the general population, not people with gender dysphoria who didn't undergo sex-reassignment.

These results say nothing of "regretting" the reassignment, or isolate any negative consequences of reassignment surgery.

All they show is that

Quote:
CONCLUSIONS:
Persons with transsexualism, after sex reassignment, have considerably higher risks for mortality, suicidal behaviour, and psychiatric morbidity than the general population. Our findings suggest that sex reassignment, although alleviating gender dysphoria, may not suffice as treatment for transsexualism, and should inspire improved psychiatric and somatic care after sex reassignment for this patient group.

I'm sure someone just posted that on some facebook anti-trans group or something. Of course he didn't read it.

If you keep this reading thing up, you'll soon find yourself trapped in the throes of pseudo-intellectual narcissism.
