Corgan doesn't go into much more detail about his spiritual adventures — he's saving that for his book, where he hopes he can put them into proper context. Pushed to elaborate on his claim of psychic abilities, he snaps, "I can levitate to Jessica Simpson's house, isn't that enough?" Mostly, he says, "I believe in constant meditative thought. You have to practice self-love — and forgiveness."

Saw it today. Below are spoilers.

TBH I didn't love this as much as everyone else seems to have. I was initially not that excited, then everyone seemed to think it was the shit so I got hyped up, and wound up being a little let down. I give it 6/10. Enjoyable, but ultimately, like LaBelle said, inessential. It felt almost like playing a SW video game or something. All the things which are great about this movie are the things that make Star Wars great in general, so although I did think of some positive things to write below, I focused mostly on how the movie fell a bit short of being the epic it could have been.

The characters: pretty flimsy. Not well developed at all. Jyn was a good protagonist and she was played very well, but her back story felt totally fumbled. I know it's just SW, but in TFA when Rey reached out and summoned the lightsaber near the end, I had chills down my spine and I was like FUCK YES. There was nothing in this movie that made me feel emotionally invested in the characters or their paths to this degree at all. There's also no compelling villain. Krennic is also played very well, but he comes across mostly as a dutiful bureaucrat. He doesn't inspire fear or hate, and I think they tried to make up for this with Vader and Tarkin but those things felt mostly like novelties to me. I did enjoy the blind guy and his heavily-armed friend, as well as Riz Ahmed as the defector A LOT. I really, really wish there had been more time to focus on these characters and contextualize them more. Alan Tudyk as the droid was also quite good and brought a good deal of "realness" and humor.

Vader was cool but not necessary. Ultimately felt a little bit cheap. Tarkin works ok but again just not necessary.

The settings: The planet hopping at the beginning was unnecessary and distracting. The Star Wars films have always been fairly narrow and concise in their treatment of the SW universe, powerfully leaving a lot to the imagination (or countless non-canon sources to fill in). This film did the opposite, focusing a lot on fleshing out the SW universe, which is one reason I think it reminded me a bit of playing a SW video game or something. However, Jehda and the Imperial base at the end were done extremely well. I loved how Jedha's architecture was a sort of mix of the Middle Eastern/North African inspired look of places like Tatooine with a bit of Romanesque Naboo thrown in. I also noted that the ruins on Jehda seemed to be based on the Nabatean ruins at Petra and elsewhere. And Jehda City itself looked a lot like Masada in Israel.

The effects: Inconsistent. Some of the special effects are dazzling. Others veer dangerously close to looking like a video game cutscene. Overall, the care and precision that went into TFA effects are not fully present here, and it shows. The droid is done masterfully, he looks great. Most of the scenery is spot-on. The CGI is done well, but there's just a lot of it, and sometimes it's too reminiscent of the prequels. The whole scene in the rain with the Death Star engineers seemed like something out of the prequels and I think a lot of that had to do with the unrealistically shiny smooth effects and CGI environment. The explosions in particular made me think of episode III or something. Totally different than how the explosive effects were done in TFA, like they look like illuminated puffs of neon smoke instead of actual explosions. The ships were also done very well for the most part, but certain shots (closeups of Star Destroys e.g.) were inexplicably cheesy looking. I loved the shots of the Imperials looking down from the Death Star onto the planets though, that was very cool.

Considering he was all CGI, Tarkin looked pretty damn good. I'm not sure I've seen a movie which pulled off a CGI human face so well. It was really impressive. Buuuut I still didn't really like it. It just wasn't necessary, they could have easily thought of a way to not have Tarkin in this movie. Ultimately, as good as the CGI is, he still doesn't look quite real, and I'm sure as the movie ages it will look less good. The eyes really give it away... he still had Toy Story eyes. And TBH I think the extent of detail they pushed kind of gave it away as well. The way this Tarkin's eyes blink, the way the wrinkles on his face move... it's too much to be real. It's overkill. You never notice a real human's eyelashes moving like that, you know? Sometimes a human face can just be still, but this guy was TOO alive if that makes sense. It kind of broke my suspension of disbelief as well because the extent to which his face was twitching every which way was counter to the original actor's very stoic, very flat mannerisms. Also I thought Leia was obviously CGI, maybe because she has so much more screen time in the films and I'm not sure Tarkin even had a close-up in ep IV, but yeah, she didn't look good to me and I wish they hadn't done that.

The story: Tying into the weakness of character development, the plot is meandering, confusing at points, and not overly inspired. Death Star again yawn. The first half of the movie is sort of a mess plot-wise, like it doesn't know where it is going. The second half succeeds in being classic Star Wars, which is great, but it seems like an overly convoluted and ineffective opening to just end as a straightforward Star Wars battle. In some ways, the movie does seem like a messily glued together composite of little segments which, by themselves, are mostly done very well, but fail to really deliver narratively when the puzzle is complete. I did not feel particularly moved as everyone died for the cause at the end.

Overall this was a fun, enjoyable movie and it did a good job of looking and feeling like Star Wars. It serves as a worthy addendum to the main movies and it wasn't a huge embarrassment or anything. I'll watch it again for sure. Hard not to compare it to TFA though, and it falls far, far short. The disjointed messiness of the characters and plot make me wonder how much was altered in the re-shoots. It's also hard to understand how Disney didn't pump enough money into the effects department to get all the effects looking consistently great, instead of 75% great and 25% significantly lacking. One more thing. The music just didn't do it. Sorry whoever replaced John Williams on this one. Totally forgettable, a pale imitation. At the most crucial moments the film SO BADLY needed the soaring themes we know and love, and it fell flat over and over.

Well I use essential in this case to mean a film that actually has crucial information for the understanding/appreciation of the story as a whole. And to be honest you could enjoy Star Wars as a whole without ever watching this film. I'm sure they considered that and that's why it's a spin off but even then it would be cool to get a few nuggets of info we couldn't have gotten anywhere else.

can you guys believe this shit, I just looked this up and it's blowing my mind.

in this universe where everyone is someone's secret sister, there is no relation between Wedge Antilles and Captain Raymus Antilles who owned C-3P0 and R2-D2 prior to their escape to Tatooine in A New Hope.

Not only that but neither of these individuals is related to Bail Antilles, a senator from Alderaan during Ep. I. Confusing enough? Bail Antilles is also not the same person as Bail Organa, ANOTHER senator from Alderaan, who is Leia's adoptive father played by Jimmy Smits
