Yeah idk. I only read one article about it:
http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/05/...n-for-reshoots

Hard to say for real, but of course their official PR would say the cut is good, they are in the business of selling this film not seeding doubt.
4 weeks of reshoots seems quite a lot to just add 'levity'

My conjecture is that Disney wasn't happy with the tone of the film; that it strayed too far from the established Star Wars formula, and there may be plot changes happening. Remember, the Episode 8 script went through a late-stage rewrite before they started filming which is why the movie was pushed back 7 months. I think Scotty is probably correct that this kind of thing is common, I just don't really care enough about any other franchises to analyze the production at this level.

TFA was so successful in my eyes because it dialed in the Star Wars formula so exactly and with such finesse. Disney has a very high bar to live up to, and they probably see themselves as having a very narrow "sweet spot" to hit between meeting expectations for future movies and not rehashing what has been done in too extreme a way. Who knows, it could be anything, but my guess is the first cut of the movie wasn't "Star Wars enough"

I work in film, I know what reshoots are and what purpose they serve. They are extremely common, even independent small movies have been doing it.

I just think a whole extra month of reshoots (which is mad expensive) doesn't quite line up with the PR line that state they are "adding some levity" which is the same line Warner gave about the Suicide Squad reshoots.
That gives the initial rumor that Disney was supposedly not pleased with the cut some creedence, which also could mean anything, maybe they just thought one or two characters needed a little more screentime or that some things weren't coming across as intended not that the film as a whole was necessarily bad.

Their statement was the film needed "levity".

The statement that it didn't test well wasn't from Disney. That was someone else. Disney hasn't screened the film to anyone outside of the corporate star chamber.

Disney has billions of dollars. A month and $50 million bucks is nothing to them. They also build time for reshoots into their schedule. That's something that started with Lucas.

At this point do they don't even have a score. Would be odd to watch a SW movie without a score.

There's a video clip out there of scenes from the original film and David Prose's on camera voice (before Jones was dubbed). I can only imagine what studio execs thought of that.

Chewbacca had dialogue on set, that was probably even weirder to see.

The Fox board wanted to shelf the original Star Wars upon watching the first cut of that film, just one exec liked it and got the film greenlit.

Levity probably refers to pratfalls and cringeworthy one-liners, which is surely something to look forward to.

clarifications on the reshoots...

http://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2016/...-reshoots.html

Quote:
Here’s what’s true: the film, which is about Rebels stealing the plans for the first Death Star just before the events of 1977’s original Star Wars, is undergoing four to five weeks of reshoots, beginning this month and ending just days before the Star Wars Celebration fan event in London on July 15.

In what may reassure fans, reshoots were scheduled for the film before even a single scene was shot. It’s standard practice now for large-scale films to build in additional weeks of shooting so filmmakers can tweak a movie after the first assembly cut.

Those reshoots were originally planned for the spring, but were bumped to mid-summer to allow for extra time as director Gareth Edwards and the creative team decided what they wanted to alter. “The changes have everything to do with clarity and character development and all take place [as inserts] within scenes we’ve already shot,” said one source on the project.

In other words, the changes involve more intimate moments – not redoing entire battle sequences or plot lines. “It’s a lot of talking in cockpits,” as one insider described the new footage.

It is now being reported that the film faces more pressure to be like J.J. Abram's hit reboot Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and will undergo reshoots that will change up to 50 per cent of the film.

According to The Playlist, Bourne Legacy director Tony Gilroy has been recruited to direct and oversee rewrites and reshoots of the film.

It is thought that the direction Edwards was taking with Rogue One was too dark for Disney's liking and bosses hope Gilroy can get the film back on track.

This does seem to be getting a bit ridiculous now. Disney would have had oversight throughout production, so it's a pretty massive failure on someone's part if the reshoots/rescripting really are this drastic. There's been zero damage control for the onslaught of reports. All I can say is the final product better be great or the fan backlash will be wretched.

that is not true. there's a lot of lousy reporting on this. And most news aggregation websites, like Huffpo, are simply reprinting unsubstantiated rumors and speculation.

Lucasfilm has stated that they are not reshooting much of the film at all. But simply adding to some existing scenes. Reshoots were part of the schedule from the beginning, just like TFA. TFA also went through weeks worth of reshoots. Some of them were being done only weeks before the film's release.

almost all of the initial reshoot "reporting" from a week and a half ago was wrong.

I wasn't really super excited for The Force Awakens before seeing it, I thought it was gonna be a lame attempt at reliving the magic.

I'm looking forward to it for the most part. That trailer is overwrought as hell, but I'll probably get my ten bucks worth on Vader tearing shit up alone.

I love the visual style they are going for from the trailers. It looks grittier and somewhat different from the way Star Wars is usually shot.
