I wrote a story for you, Scotty.

Every morning Scott's alarm went off at 8 am. Set to talk radio, he set it every night, and woke up every morning at 8 am. He would stare at the dingy walls, broken window, and dripping air condenser hoping and praying that today would be his last day in this miserable shithole. At 40 and unemployed, he was left with few options. His welfare check barely covered his rent for this matchbox apartment in the worst part of town and his meals consisted of mostly Ramen noodles. Yet, despite his dire situation, Scott woke up every morning at 8 am to the soothing voices of financial talk radio. It made him feel like he had a purpose. It made him feel like he was a successful businessman getting up to head to work. In fact, he was so insistent on living this facade that Scott would get up, put on a business suit, and stare at the phone in hopes that one of his hundreds of applications would call back for an interview. Scott had applied everywhere from McDonalds to the mattress stores on every corner. Nobody called. Nobody ever called. Not just a lack of employers, Scott was alone. Lacking friends, with nothing but a drug addled uncle, Scott never received a call. He often would go out to the bars and pretend he had enough money to buy drinks--to the point of putting ice in water and carrying that cup around--but nobody liked him. He never could understand why. Scott's problem was that he was wholly unable to make meaningful relationships. Arrogant, entitled and borderline delusional; he thought he was far superior to everyone else.

As he sat alone at his kitchen table underneath the torn and faded poster of Billy Corgan, next to the signed photo of The Smashing Pumpkins' fan cruise which read "The world is a vampire. -Billy Corgan" Scott began to cry. Dressed to go to work, he did the only thing he knew how to do. He slouched over to his Compaq Presario running Windows 98, the outer shell stained yellow from years of filth and smoking. There, he logged onto Netphoria, a long abandoned Smashing Pumpkins fan forum. "My only friend, redbreegull," he thought. As he posted abundantly about Hillary Clinton, in depth analyses of Smashing Pumpkins lyrics, and "fuck you, fuzzy", Scott realized he did not need real friends, or a job. Netphoria was always there for him.

A single tear rolled down his eye, as he realized the futility and ultimate failure that his life was.

The lady at the shelter solemnly replied, "Well, sir, you don't have the adoption fee and your environment seems detrimental to our dogs."
Scott, teary-eyed, left the shelter, ultimately defeated and headed to the bus stop.
