here's my take on father daughter dances.

it is a little creepy, however not inherently. its hard to separate one's experiences and the statistics of child abuse with the fact that most fathers don't treat their daughters sexually because it is such a part of someone once they've been a victim. myself included.

so when i look at this stuff it does creep me out and i do think it makes a GREAT cover for dads who are abusive, but the practice itself does not cause or indeed prevent father/daughter abuse

its like being an alter boy isn't inherently a position of being sexually abused but it's a really great way to have a victim and have your relationship with them seem legit because the basis of spending time together is publicly sanctioned. otherwise how would you have alone time with 8 year old boys you aren't related to.

I legit had to worry about this with my ex, who proclaimed his wanting a daughter so he could rape her and "punish" her when she was bad with rape. I feel like you're going a little too far here, that's a big accusation to make of someone you don't really know.

I think this is it, for me, too. It isn't going to be a problem for a lot of people - in terms of them not encountering abuse. But if it has happened before, and the tradition is unnecessary or replaceable, then I feel like it would be better to scrap the tradition, for safety's sake.

NOT having father-daughter dances isn't going to stop any abuse from happening. So what's the point? It's a creepy tradition to us but does it actually cause anything bad to happen w/r/t abuse?

Well, it's really fucked up and groce that you people think an adult can't even go camping without some disgusting underlying sexual motive, which is in itself indicative of some serious problem you have with children. If you can't perceive of an adult interacting with a child in any non-sexual way, then that's proof enough you have some psychological anxiety or disorder that makes you unable to view children in a non-sexual way.

Scout leaders definitely shouldn't be taking scouts camping without parent volunteers, both male and female. I was a scout; in NZ (as is the case, presumably, in all countries these days) is co-ed, and I went on an overnight hike with two other boys my own age (14), and two male leaders. One of the boys groped me all night after I kissed him, even after I had asked him to stop. He also shone a torch on me while I was crouched in the bushes urinating despite me crying out for him to stop. The two scout leaders had disappeared to go possum hunting, and didn't realise until the next day. To their credit, they were fuming then, and made him walk at the front all the way back. But my other scout leader, on a different hike, even when my father and brothers were present, told me quietly that he would have brought some marijuana to smoke if he'd known I was into it.

So yeah. Scouts isn't perfect either, and needs more parental involvement, IMO.

yeah i have anxiety around children and it's fucked up. i dont see them sexually as in sexually attractive, but im acutely aware that to some people they are, and that kind of insight is not conductive to care free relationships with children. i like to think that my awareness of this helps keep things in perspective, personally

I don't know if it's just a gender role thing, but a lot of young girls like to dance where as the boys are more prone to bond with their fathers with sport and that kind of thing. Most young males aren't really into the whole "dance" thing and if they are it's only for chasing some tail or something.

Again, what you guys are missing is that for a lot of girls the daddy/daughter dances are their ideas! They have a blast getting their old man out of his element and getting him to do something that they like to do. It's really quite sweet and nice. It's sad that you guys have to look at this thru such a perverted lens.
