rbg is spot on. when people use the language of love/lust/sexual attraction to describe child parent relationships i find it disgusting.

The father/daughter thing, though, tends to be romanticised in a way that the mother sun relationship does not. From this meme to purity balls it's acceptable to treat girls this way (not boys) and it's reinforced by the broader culture. But that's not surprising, since this shit is rooted in patriarchy

I do kind of think that parents/guardians/role models shape our attitudes and expectations about the relationships we form with males/females in general but not necessarily solely in a romantic capacity. For instance, maybe a woman who grew up with an absentee or emotionally manipulative father will be more accepting of that kind of treatment from men later in life, whether it's her partner or her boss or whatever. Buuuuut this is total folk psychology, I have no idea if this kind of thing can be backed up.
