Why is dressing a girl up like a doll or mini woman and taking her to a dance as if she were your girlfriend considered a father genuinely loving his daughter? Who needs that?

I kind of think of Freud as the Marx of his field. Most of his conclusions were totally nuts and really off, but many of the assumptions he operated on are accurate and relevant and his ideas did totally change the entire way we think about the human mind.

Yes, Fuzzy, that professionally-shot photo that appears to be a magazine excerpt was just a spur-of-the-moment thing. Sometimes you're on the beach in a white three-piece with your daughter sitting on your lap staring into your eyes, and a random guy with a camera and those umbrella things shows up and snaps a quick one.

One part of me says that a parent and a child dancing is completely innocuous and healthy. The other part of me thinks that father-daughter dances carry creepy patriarchal overtones of customs of women belonging to their fathers until such time that a suitor approved by her parents sell her off for two mules and an acre of rutabaga crop.

I don't know enough about psychoanalysis, but I kind of see it as what astrology is to astronomy. Like, Freud helped start the field of inquiry into the mind and the idea that there are mental processes an individual is not aware of, but he kind of just made baseless unfalsifiable assumptions like "Girls are probably envious of penises. It makes sense because have you noticed they haven't got any?" But despite the fact that his work wasn't scientific, it's still important to the history of the field as science tends to emerge from pre-science anyway as things get more refined (chemistry's roots in alchemy, Newton being an occultist and astrologer, etc).

Marx, I feel like he kind of over-speculated about how society would progress and took on too much of a narrative-y view of history (history is always oppressed people eventually rebelling against their oppressor and then forming the new system of relations, therefore that thing ought to happen with the bourgeoisie and proletariat), but his models seemed a lot more scientific than Freud's. He didn't just make things up that couldn't be tested, like the ego, id, and superego. He made actual predictions, and created conceptual models that one could actually apply to reality to see if they were consistent (labour theory of value). It just turns out that what he predicted happened to be wrong (instead of the proletariat becoming increasingly emiserated as they become too poor to buy the goods they produce, the capitalist state adds a whole bunch of socialist reforms and the middle-class doesn't really feel like taking over the means of production anymore because hey I have social security and a half-hour lunch break so life is pretty good being a prole right now; meanwhile, communism happens in non-industrial states) and some of his models happened to not be very useful (labour theory of value kind of breaks down under closer analysis).

It's not necessarily about her skin color or religion... it's just a page out of a feminism from a different era. In the 60s the idea that a man could be a better feminist than any woman was probably inconceivable I would guess. I think Steinem probably believes that having a female in the White House is the most empowering thing that could possibly happen for women. I think my generation mostly disagrees very strongly and sees female empowerment totally differently.
