Tyson? Yeah I think he's okay, but it kind of annoys me how he always tries to push this disinterested above-the-fray image of being completely neutral and objective because he's a scientist, as if scientists are some species apart from normal folk. I wouldn't be surprised if scientists tend to be less biased in their everyday judgments than the general population due to the emphasis on certain epistemic values in their profession, but the effect probably wouldn't be large. They are still people with cognitive biases and preferences. Objectivity in science comes from the rigorous scrutiny and revision by peers (intersubjectivity), not necessarily from the cognitive attributes of individual scientists.

Also kind of annoys me how he sometimes wades into fields outside his profession, but when people try to hold him to account, he's like "hey look, I'm just a scientist, I don't care about that stuff." People like Chomsky, at least when they talk about politics, they are very clear about their commitments. And they don't act as if their authority in their area of science carries over to some other arena. They let their insights in whatever other field they speak about stand on their own merits.

i dont agree. i've heard him speak at length about bias in science and the importance of scientific method, peer review, etc. i think you're projecting

when it comes to politics he only comments publicly on issues of science. Like global warming. Or the NASA budget. for instance he rarely discusses his views on religion. he's stated that he feels discussing it is devisive and won't change anyone's mind anyway.

Tyson is also a public spokesman for science. it's literally his job as the director of the Hayden Planetarium to advocate for scientific literacy. so most of his public talks are simply not going to get very deep in the weeds regarding the intricacies of scientific method. however, i've listened to a lot of interviews with him on various science podcasts where he has.
