A pear is closer to an apple than a custard apple. Sort of like how a poire is closer to a pomme than a pomme de terre.

Still though, when a pear is overripe, it's juicy and delicious, whereas when an apple is overripe, it is soft and floury and kind of revolting.

But pears being sandy apples?? Only a couple of varieties are that grainy - maybe Beurre Bosc? Packham and Bartlett pears aren't....or is it just the skin that is grainy?

I used to think cherries are berries. When I found out they are drupes, I sort of hit my head and was like had a "duh" moment. They even look like tiny little plums. They don't even have berry-like vines or nothing.

That was just a little glimpse into the sublimity of plant biology. I can't imagine what you experience every day.

Understanding the world of plants has made it easier for me to cope with everyday life. I reccomend that everyone do this

I always do wonder what the fuck it means when people ask "what's a good guitar for a beginner?" Like, I'm supposed to say, "get this guitar, it has fewer strings, so it's not as complicated" or something.

One that you can afford and isn't shitty quality is a "good guitar" regardless of skill level.

I always tell people to buy a used acoustic for a hundred bucks and take someone who knows guitars to check it out for you. Although a small number of beginners will keep with it and want to upgrade in a few months, most will not, or will only pick it up once in a blue moon when the novelty wears off so no need to spend hundreds on that. Maybe some people can, but I have never encountered a beginner who can really tell the difference between the sound and playability of a beginner guitar from a box and a thousand dollar martin.

For acoustic guitars the action is the most important thing for beginners, I reckon. And the strings. Steel strings hurt and it takes a while to build up callouses. Nylon strings are easier on the fingertips but the action on most cheap nylon string guitars is terrible, and that can make it hard in a different way, for beginners. I would probably tell them to try playing it and see how hard/uncomfortable it is for them to hold down the strings while strumming.

Yeah, action is very important. The thing is that someone with no experience playing guitar is not going to know what feels good or not. It's all going to feel uncomfortable and unnatural. It takes so much practice to even learn to hold the neck correct. Maybe I'm selling newbies short but I certainly had no conception of what a guitar was supposed to feel like when I started playing and I've tried to help beginners guitar shop before, and telling them they should be looking for something that just feels right and is easy to play means like nothing to a non-player.

like I'm trying to imagine shopping for a saxophone or something and having people tell me to pick one based on what "feels right"

not shitting on what you said vixnix I think it's correct, it's just really difficult. I think honestly the truth is kind of that no guitar is going to seem like the right one to someone who can't play yet and it's impossible to tell what will feel correct to that person once they are an experienced player. Best just to buy cheap and upgrade to something good if you stick with it.

personally I started playing on an electric with gauge 9 strings. They still hurt my fingers like hell, but I built up callouses quickly. I recently switched over to a classical with nylon strings for the first time ever because my main squeeze is stuck overseas until I can get it shipped home. It was so disconcerting, my fingers were slipping all over the place at first.

i learned bass on a bass that i learned years later had way too high action. thing is of course i got used to that. So i kept it this way. I still play that bass in fact. Action set still about the same.. it might have got me to struggle more in the beginning i suppose, but it sure made my fingers strong.
