I used to think this but I actually think she might just be awful and when she gets halfway into defending some appalling idea (euthanise people with paedophilic ideation, race isn't a real factor in america, etc etc) realises that she's awful, and then tries to pass it off as trolling or baiting.

I like how the author went to talk to a "meme scientist" about the picture who articulately explains why people find it humorous. A lot of care went into this article... you know, for an article about a merme

Interviewer: Will you pose for a picture with me wearing this Ermahgerd wig?
R.L. Stine: No. No, I will not. I have to say, I don’t really understand what’s funny about it.
Interviewer: I don’t know, man, it’s just ‘Ermahgerd’!
R.L. Stine: Well I’m on Twitter and about five people a day say, ‘Have you seen this?’ I just don’t get it. I don’t get it.

I'm with R.L.

I don't even know anymore. Wealth and privilege are so relative and we've lived in so many places in the past 10 years, and in each place we've been at a different place on the boushe continuum, I really actually have no idea.

I don't really get it either. Oh my gods a pretty stupid saying and it's just said in that South Park accent "They took er jerbsssss!"

I guess the girl looks pretty silly in the photo, but it's a little odd that it's turned into some phenomenon

mom joke going around.

Ok I need to VENT!! So, I went to Walmart to get some stuff for tonight's dinner and noticed this lady was staring at me on the same aisle I was on. No biggie. I moved to the next aisle and here she comes again... STARING! So now I'm like, "WTF?!", but finish up my shopping and head to the check out line. Of course this same lady was ahead of me... and starts staring again. Awkward!!! So I start playing with my phone so I don't have to look at her. Finally she says "I want to apologize for staring at you, but you look just like my daughter who just passed away." I felt really bad after that and gave her my condolences. She says "thank you but I have a favor to ask. I understand if you don't want to but can you give me a hug and say 'bye mama' to me?" Inside I was like "SCCCHWEIRD", but me being the softie that I am, I went ahead and did it. She smiles, thanks me, and leaves. The cashier rings up my stuff and the total comes out to $100.87. I knew something wasn't right, because after my coupons it should have been like $40 or so. The girl tells me that my total was included with my mom's. I'm like, "What?!!!" she said, "Your mom said you were paying for her last few items along with your things. I told her that the woman was most definitely NOT my mom!!!! She said, well I saw you hug her and heard you call her mama. I flew out of the store looking for this witch, ready to beat her a@*. I see her loading up her car! She saw me and jumped in her car, I got to her as she was putting her leg in, and I started pulling her leg... JUST LIKE I'M PULLING YOURS!!!! Hope you all are having a wonderful day!

The best part of that joke is that it doesn't make sense that the crook would be able to carry the groceries to her car before the mark paid for them.

I liked this:

Just incase you were weren't aware. On October 19th the federal election takes place. Heroes across Canada will go vote. Now when you go vote it's important to keep one thing in mind. Canada is the greatest Country in the world. Everyone over the age of 18 should make an effort to get out to the polls. Now if you're curious about who i'm voting for. All you have to do is read the first letter of each sentence.

but ultimately nobody gives a fuck if you don't think it's funny, since there's no cultural context and nothing objectionable about it there should be no issue and the only thing i can think of is that you just like to feel superior for the stupidest reasons imaginable which is ultimately yo soy mejor's "personality"

rich in calcium lololol it got me again

you're right trots, there is just something really beautiful in the absolute irreverent absurdity of shit like this. I don't really know how to explain why it's funny, but it feels like some sort of revel in chaos and meaninglessness which is always fun. Part of the humor is also in the very fact that you know so many people are staring at that shit shaking their heads completely bewildered and unamused.

people sure do talk a lot and not interact. most of the people who do don't want to have a dialogue. everything about life is so alienating and shallow i feel like there are amazing people out there but other voices are so loud. and everything is so one-way. why is so much energy put into things that don't matter but ultimately these things that don't matter, have huge impact on actually feeling if things are okay or not. it's a big paradox and i find it all really depressing that i take things so personal. like when i pour out my heart in words or a piece of art i spent hours drawing and nobody (well, maybe a few people will) like it on instagram and it gets me so incredibly depressed when i see essentially garbage like text in words that aren't even the own persons words or like a picture of some meme going around will get so much validation. why does it depress me and affect me? it shouldn't. if i were a better person none of it would matter but it does.

because the internet doesn't let us get away from the fact that even adult life is little more than a popularity contest

think of artists in the past, and think of them now. these days it seems like they all have these outgoing, positive personalities so they can network with the people who make the calls, who are also outgoing people people who probably have positivity on the mind all the time because everything sucks, and there is little room for the recluse

idk maybe i'm wrong

This is true I think. In large part because of the internet, we are living in an age in which everyone feels they have the right to be empowered, to feel like they are the center of something, to be rewarded for performing on a stage of their own making. The internet can be wonderful but it can also be terrible and I think it is easy to get lost inside of the perception that this light-speed inter-connectivity is all there is.

I like to remind myself that we aren't evolved to exist in that world though. Getting off the computer and taking a walk in the woods or spending time with people you enjoy being with (not through a screen) is the best thing for me to expel anxiety and depression, and it makes the interwebs feel insignificant.

well, it's even more complex than that to me, as an artist before and after. it really doesn't seem to be the vibe at all but more how many people you know. i know some AMAZING SHIT BALLS CRAZY GOOD artists that literally have no following. and then meme generating and thieving tumblr generation artists thrive riding on the backs of people who did something good first and its not a lot of just different iterations of someone elses work. like, i know this is a bad example but maybe a good one, but how many times have you seen a riff on the unknown pleasures album cover? or a wu-tang graphic? or the misfits? or occult symbols? there are a lot of copy and pasters. i dunno, i think a lot of the angst i have has to do with the amount of time and feeling i put into something. there are a to of negative people out there, that are loud, that get plenty of validation. the best artists i know are reclusive in nature. i am reclusive but i wouldn't say i'm an amazing artists but i know that my style is unique. and to me that's what matters the most. is being yourself. and there's not a lot of room to be yourself.

i can read a twitter feed full of the latest lingo and i don't know WHO THE FUCK is talking because it all sounds the same. meme's. stupid fucking slang. culture references over and over. "tho" "netflix and chill" constant riffing off really tired shit and jokes people made 10-15 years ago. regurgitated. and internet celebrities that have no soul just doing the same thing everyone else is doing. it is a popularity contents but even the people you would think wouldn't think would be so shallow, actually are on-line. the art and music community is not very supportive of each other. feminists are actually a beam of sunshine because i see a lot of women supporting each other. and loudly. there is a lot of people putting other people down. there is a lot of passive aggressiveness. there is a lot of hate and fear. but there are amazing people out there, famous or not. it's just that in order to be seen through the noise, no matter who you are, you have to submit to a shitty set of rules. sell out. put your feet down river. it's just not a nurturing field to work in. in never has been really. but atleast in the past a lot of art was inaccessible. we live in the age or banksy and digital artists that just "remix" culture. there is nothing really wrong with that but when it's all not even derivative, it's just straight copies it really feels soulless. the older generation has had to compete with the way the younger smarter more industrious types are. art is not merely expression anymore, it's industry and commerce. and that ultimately kills everything. just like it has with music, movies, writing, everything. anyone can do it. and the ones that tend to get picked up now are not necessarily the best. they're just the luckiest, loudest and likely the most obnoxiously not humble about anything.

nah, i'm being serious. i probably sound sarcastic or cynical. but it's actually real feelings. i know everyone has an opinion about it too. or someone has figured it out. or whatever. and that's even more depressing.

i think it is this way because there's that, nothing or being completely humiliated because of being an outspoken idiot. because if you're loud and dumb you get noticed too. and those people end up getting something positive out of it too eventually. in hindsight usually, but even the worst of the worst have fans. and no validation at all, is essentially a shoulder turned away. alienated. it sucks it is that way. the people closest to me operate that way. their friends are hungry for love and approval but it is too busy being spent somewhere else, in more popular online circles.

one positive is that the "underground" scene, the minorities, there is some really amazing things going on that no one is paying attention to or giving praise to. and that is kind of cool that kind of culture really does exist. there's underground art and music scenes, film circles that are just doing out of this world good stuff that isn't popular but it will likely be the next thing consumed by popular culture. you get old enough you see the cyclical nature of everything. how underground goes mainstream. mainstream then continues to borrow from the underground. mainstream gets old and tired and something new to the mainstream again takes to light and people go back underground and the thing happens all over again.

I kind of think that in every era, people who are well-known or accomplished either just stumble into it through sheer dumb luck, or they have very type A personalities and feel immense drive to constantly network, self-promote, and sell themselves like a product. I'm not sure it's really unique to the internet age. It's just now we have this illusion that since everyone is connected and anyone can get their shit out there, that should be an equalizing force and everyone talented should just sort of float to the top through the virtue of their skill.

there is nothing to compare it to other than itself. it's the way things are done now. the old way of doing anything may not as well have existed. you're a lot younger than i am. so even the way things used to be for you are a lot different to the way things used to be for someone 10-15 years older than you. but apparently things have changed enough even for gen Y'ers that it's hard to keep up.
