one of the worst things on facebook is seeing a status update along the lines of "my grandmother passed away" followed by a profoundly emotional eulogy spreaded out for the internet to read, and then noticing it has 356 likes

facepalm from beginning to end

This is a post for Seventh Day Adventists. I've been reluctant to make this post because half of my fb friends are non sda and likely non-Christian but I feel I have to say something. I shared this in church last Sabbath but I can reach a lot more of you here.

What I see on fb is an obsession with the pope. Most of it derogatory and negative and he hasn't done anything wrong. Of course we are going to disagree with him theologically so is that a reason to plaster him all over fb. All we are doing is giving ourselves a bad name because the people love him and I think he is a pretty neat guy also. Remember he is human and Jesus died for him too just the same as He died for you and me.

Remember Matt. 24:14. "This gospel must be preached in all the world as a witness to all nations, then the end shall come. " This gospel, not this pope. Even the 3angels message the gospel comes first and the call to worship God as creator. This should be our priority. Also, this verse shows us how much work must be done before any Sunday law will come in. The Muslim nations need to open up to the gospel yet (and they will, wait and see) and there is no way the secular world is ready for that yet. A lot of things need to happen yet and a lot more calamities I believe before they can push that through.

Revelation 13:3 says all the world wondered after............ We need to make sure we are not doing this too because there is more than one way we can wonder after something.

Jesus said "if I be lifted up I will draw all men to me." That is who we should be lifting up on fb. If we were as passionate about Him as we are the pope we might be home by now.

I interpreted b0lly as meaning that "likes" are inappropriate on posts expressing grief, not that it's bad for people to grieve online.

well he should also know it's the only option facebook gives you and most of us accept a "like" on something like that is just the least someone can do i guess

i mean it might mean something to someone to get 350 likes and a bunch of people expressing sympathy and reaching out to them i mean it seems arbitrary and stupid to your taste but this modern world is a strange place with a lot of weird new ways to interact with other evil monkeys

since this isn't just some ad hominem attack on me i would like to clarify what i meant.

in a roundabout way, my post was exactly about how the modern world is a strange place that is very twisted and alienating.

the need to get a numeral value for perceived approval in the form of "likes", more often than not from people you barely even really know, and this binary division of the world into 1=GREAT!, 0=NOT GREAT! is part of what makes facebook so soul crushing, to me.

and specifically in the case of an beloved individual passing, the way i see it, the least dignifying way of "honoring" him or her, is to air out a eulogy from the convenience of your laptop, aimed at an audience that most likely knew fucking nil about the person in question, and are glancing at the bleeding words you'd written as they're scrolling through clickbait quizzes and vacation photos.

i don't really mean to get into that facebook hate discussion again, i'm not really that invested in it as making these comments make it out to be. i just think it's a key representation of what went wrong with society. it's kind of a trigger for me i guess, like you have said you're liable to get from environmental talk

I get what you are saying, but what exactly is wrong or less healthy about this? Intuitively, I understand the strangeness you are describing; people who, without social media, you would not even know anymore clicking a button to offer their condolences... it does seem twisted in a way, but is this really the result of something going wrong with our society? Or is it the standard human urge to reject change even when it is without clearly definable moral or utilitarian implications?

Teh Bolly was one of those dudes who shortly after the invention of the printing press was standing on street corners wailing about how the youth of the day were going to waste away their lives with their noses buried amongst simple bits of paper

I can kind of relate because I hate being wished a happy birthday from people that I don't like or never talk to me, which is why I have my birthday hidden on FB but the death of a loved one is different. People have all sorts of reactions to death, and as long as it's respectful, all of those reactions are acceptable.

debatable if "wrong or less healthy" - but hitting the like button after people write that a loved one passed is as impersonal as it gets, and oh so easy. no words needed, don't even hit up that "friend" to type - sorry for your loss. too much to ask.

people are ending their relationships with a text, too - or by changing their relationship status on fb.

so by my own preferences - impersonal like buttons are just that, impersonal, and the sympathy they apparently show to some, takes a fucking second inbetween hitting LIKE on the meme of the day.
so to me that is not sympathy, it's fake, and I absolutely understand how some people would not want to participate in the like-culture, or even despise it.
I prefer one-on-one interactions to talking into a void (status updates) about things that matter to me, including death - and getting likes back from the void. I live fine without it.

I have never been in the situation of posting about the death of someone who I know personally. I do understand what he is saying though (I think). When you post something and it gets 50 likes, that makes you feel good, right? Surely everyone at some level gets a feeling of validation, of recognition from this. Better than if you post something and it gets ignored, anyway. So the quantification of condolences in public to validate one's grief is... strange.

On the other hand though, death is an extreme situation, and I think generally brings people together more effectively than any other occurrence in life. Maybe 300 likes on a death status on fb isn't any different. At a funeral there are often friends and family that haven't had anything to do with the deceased in years. People that have had no better reason to have anything to do with you in ages will call to say they are sorry for your loss. People will give you flowers and bring you food just because death. It's kind of the same thing I think.
